4 years antediluvian Hyacinth Macaw - any Experience (PARROT)?
I am purchacing a Hyacinth Macaw, she is 4 yrs old, can talk a fair bit, loves attention and playing - grew up around childeren and i am lately preparing on her arrival, such as stand, toys, feed ect. I have researhed quite alot on the species and hold wanted to own one for a very long time now, finally i hold had the oppertunerty. I ask for any other info that may be useful...has anyone have experience?what are some things that i should take note of? I know they are very time consuming and that they enjoy many needs to be met i just wantt some push for that i cannot google such as personal exp. or something on those lines.
I know it will be challenging but i have wanted a macaw for relatively a while now, i have first hand experience beside a variety of exotic partots such as the Black Glossy Cockatoo, The sulpher crest coclatoo, the eastern Rosella, Long billed Corella, and your common parrots such as galah's, cockateils and budgies, is that ample experience for a first time Macaw owner. I hope so but i just want anyone else to point out things i may find usefull. Thanks everyone! :)
Congratulations on your soon-to-be strange feathered friend. It seams as though you have prepared yourself as much as you possibly can - doesn't matter how much you read or how tons experts you talk to - you will always be unprepared for something when it comes to these amazing birds.
Before I took on my first African Grey I did voluntary work in a bird park and 4 years research (yup - required one desperately my whole life so parents told me that as long as I do me research I could get one for my 18th Birthday). I couldn't believe how under-prepared I be. I read about their intelligence but never, ever could you have explained to me the level of intelligence they display - truly amazing.
yes all birds are time consuming contained by just the fact that they need attention . they must enjoy a varied diet as well such as daily fruit ,veggies and a correct amount of pellets . they also must be taken care of daily such as contained by attention and must not be caged indefinately either . they must be also in the center of things . good luck .
Answers: Wow, I am envious! I've always wanted a hyacinth macaw as economically, I think they are gorgeous. I have 4 of my own macaws but none are hyacinths... I have a blue throat, two camelots and a military. I've worked seriously with blue and golds as well.
Obviously, macaws are the loudest as their calls accomplish over a mile so that they can communicate in the wild. Hyacinths are the "gentle giants" of adjectives macaws. They have the most ability to hurt with their beak but generally choose not to unless they feel extremely threatened.
This site has personal experiences with assorted macaws;

I have a friend who did not raise his hyacinth properly and cannot go in the neighbourhood it so I think it is all in what you put into the bird that tell you what you will get back out.
Make sure you enjoy plenty of walnuts! Hyacinths need a ton of those in their diet and it would be best to put them in food finding toys (foraging toys) so that it is more time consuming for the bird to put away like it would be in the wild. It keep him busy and occupied instead of bored.
