Advice on getting a pet Cockatoo?
I'm considering getting a Cockatoo as I've always loved birds & think they make great pets - but I'd really love any direction from people who have experience owing them.
I've read up a lot on how to safekeeping for them, etc.
I've owned smaller birds in the past (cockatiels and budgies), but I've always needed either a parrot or cockatoo.
What I want to know is do you recommend keeping them in a shut within for any period of time, and when?
I've always had a problem near birds being in cages (My cockatiels be so easy to train & I always used to let them fly around most of the time, they be only in the cage at darkness but I let them out again first thing in the morning).
I've see some brilliant perches. I was thinking of just have a huge perch in the corner of the lounge for it to sit on - I love the thought of it being out all the time, man able to fly around, etc.
Is it OK for them to be out all the time, or do you recommend putting them in a coop at night?
Also, I've heard they can be quite possessive & single bond to one person, is that true?
I just want to find out as much as possible about them and any direction you can give would be brilliant
Thanks
A cockatoo is a great pet, i have a minature one but some advice is to get it as a kid and if you feed it and you play with it and you other with it then it might only bond near you...and yes i do recomend putting them in a cage at night only for safety reasons...they mite see somthing and it might scare them and they will fly around and hurt themselves..also a suggestion is to put a blanket over the pen at night..in summer obviously put a gaunt sheet over so they can sleep peacefully> It can be out all the time ..i mean i know a bird thats tame but stays out side contained by a tree the whole day and comes down when you call it but..he be probably trained really really well...i do recommend getting a cockatoo but they can bite saw jst 2 let you know..just some other guidance on birds...NEVER feed them avocado or chocolate they will die if they eat it..
I know alot of people hold on to cockatoos as pets in there house but they aren't really the best pets as they can have lots of mental problems i.e pulling the featers out when they are keep hold of on there own with no company of there own generous. So they don't have a very happy energy .They are best keep in very huge avairy with a mate.
Answers: owning a cockatoo is a lifelong commitment, make sure you are prepared. do lots of research first. in attendance are soooo many cockatoos in rescue shelters because people realize that they werent the cute and cuddly bird the expected. They require lots of attention, and need to be treated like family. It will be approaching having a 3 yr old child for the rest of your life. Definitely check out this site first, turn your speakers up, and read as much as possible.

hi there, getting a cockatoo is a big response wherewithal.
they are such lovely birds i would only think off getting one whether you are 100% sure or have had experiance next to other birds. if not get a cockatiel and after 6 months to 1 year if you are still certain get one!
but cockatoo's are about lb1000 for the basic one and a macaw is almost lb1000 so if i had to choose id achieve a macaw, because they are bigger, smarter, and just basicly better birds. cockatoo's have lovely quill. (the piece on its head that sticks up) and are good for dacing.
its up to you what bird you get. im NOT aphorism GET A MACAW! NOT A COCKATOO! im just advising you. you can get any bird you want lol.
i would merely think of getting a cockatoo if you've had experiance next to a other bird. or els it will be HARD! trust me im only trying to help.
thew size cage i would carry it one of them ones that are about lb80-lb200
in pet shops or if you want to clip its wing have it on a stand in your house and put it on there at dark when the lights or of it should go to sleep. and when they come on it'll wake up. but get swings around and toy's etc.
hope i help you :)
Cockatoos are a lot of work. They live a long time, and can be very destructive. They also have need of a large cage. If it was out of the shut within I'd recommend supervision at all times, as their beaks can destroy abundantly more than a cockatiels and in a very short time. They can also be VERY loud.
However, if you can make a contribution them the proper care they need they make great pets. A huge perch is a pious idea, I'd just recommend that you'd watch it when it ws out of it's cage-or whether possible bird proof your room, and keep it caged at night.
