Can cockatiels be kept singly?

(I'm not sure if I put this in the right category) Yeah I'm going to draw from one or two pet cockatiels and I wondered if I get one, will it become lonely when I'm at school(about 7 hours)? Also, where is the best place to put the cage-in my bedroom where on earth I can see the cockatiel(s) but it/they won't see other people apart from me(and can fly safely) or in a more public area where on earth it will see more people? One more thing, is it better to keep two females or two males together-because I don't want them breeding!

Thankyou lots for your time, Septhen.
Yes they can be kept singly If it is single it is nice to talk with it
But if they are is duo they are difficult to train.they will start breeding then.
Cockatiels are fine to be on their own as long as you spend time next to them when you can.
If you get two they will be able to keep respectively other company. If you put it in a more public area it will usually try to achieve the attention of everybody there.
It is all a very personal judgment.

Answers:    Many ancestors think you must have 2 birds so they won't become lonely. This it totally NOT true. A single bird can do very in good health on it's own as long as you make sure he has toys that are switched around at least possible every month, his cage is large enough and you distribute him one on one time each day. He will be fine while you are at school ,or work. Keeping 2 birds together is ok, but you will hold a much nicer bird if you don't. 2 birds usually bond to each other, and don't enjoy much need for the owner, and may become nippy and unruly.. Letting a bird fly in the house is not a good theory...birds can become seriously injured (especially the smaller birds) if they fly into walls, mirrors, ceiling fans...it does not take much to break a wing or even a collar. Keep your birds wings clipped. Keeping 2 birds of the same sex can be done easier if you own 2 males. Females many times fight over the cage when they become sexually matured (usually around 6 to 8 mon) and will fight with each other. Males will also brawl for domination, but not as badly as the females. Like I said, you don't have to have 2 birds. Make certain you keep the cage where it will not be within a draft of any kind, or in front of a heating/air conditioner vent. Keeping your bird in a living room or some where on earth in the dining room (never the kitchen) is a better idea, because the bird gets to be a constituent of all the action, and more like a family unit member. If you treat your bird as such, it will not need a cage mate. Please read my profile.
