Clipping My Bird's Nails?
I have a breeding pair of cockatiels and he is hurting her when he mounts her since his nails are somewhat sharp, and I want to clip them. I was wondering how would I do this? I am a little afraid of clipping the Kwik. My pet stores don't sell cement perch.
D you have a reputable bird store/breeder in your nouns? They normally can do it for very little expense!
Regular nail clippers, in recent times do not go too short. Each time you do it, the kwik will receded, ever so little. Cutting off the sharp ends will help out a lot.
Another trick- try filing their nails. We do this on our cockatiel and cockatoo! Just get one of the dog nail trimmers that spins. Used it once and it is so fast, works great!
In any event, you are right to be concerned- do not go too short! Make certain you have the proper stuff from the pet store to put on their feet if you do hit blood. NEED to stop the bleeding ASAP as their little bodies cannot stand much blood loss!
You can buy cement/sandy perches online;

Otherwise I'd recommend taking your bird to an experienced vet to have the nail clipping done as you can smoothly clip too much and make your bird's nail bleed. It's best to have a professional show you precisely how to do it rather than attempting it yourself for the first time.
hello mackenzie.
if you cant trim your cockatiels nails yourself you should take them to a bird grommer i taken my cockatiel to the grommers and it be great although they are expensive .it would be great if they had cement perches so the nail wont get sharp.GOOD LUCK!

Answers: Don't use the cement perches.
They are horrible for the bird's feet - even if they profile the nails down, they can cause sores on the pads of the birds foot.
An easier way to control the growth of the nails is by providing a large multiplicity of perch shapes and sizes.
Also - natural wood perches are better than dowel like (completely smooth man made wooden perches) ones.
Getting some that are hefty enough to where the birds toes do not wrap entirely around them is best.
To clip them - have someone else hold your bird for you (have them use a towel, they might bite when you do this).
Take a set of two of cat nail clippers (like this: http://www.petco.com/product/10274/JW-Pe... )
And just snip the VERY tip off.
You don't have need of to cut too far, just cut so the tip is blunt and not sharp/pointy. After doing this once, and changing up the perches you hold, you shouldn't run into any more problems.

its normal and easier for him the get a grip whilst over her you cant be certain if she is in misery and if she was im sure she would see him off instantly but all you could do is clip just the tip of the staple off but even if you do that the nails will still be sharp
