Cockatiel bonding and femininity?
Ok, well I have 2 male cockatiels that are apparently bonded. They bicker occasionally, but bar a bit of hostility, they follow each other everywhere and preen each other.
Well presently there's been a female introduced into their cage (who I thought be male until recently) and she hasn't bonded with either however. She's not tame at all, so neither has she bonded beside humans.
I was wondering if there be any chance of the female mating next to either of the males, despite them not getting on? Or if there be any chance of her forming a bond with them? I really don't want any eggs, three cockatiels is enough...
Answers: If you really don't want any eggs, afterwards take the female out and keep her within her own cage. She may never mate with either of the males, but she's much more potential to do so eventually and then you will not only have eggs but your males will probably not seize along any more either and could seriously hurt each other as there is no mode your cage is large enough for a mate pair and a third bird who will pose a threat to the mate (in your males' eyes anyway). Egg laying is not bad simply because you will own excess birds, laying will also deplete your female's calcium stores which can lead to weakness and bone disease. Not to mention the strictly high risk of your female becoming egg bound or have a "yolk stroke" if she is unable to lay her eggs.
i think that you should seperate the birds whether you dont want eggs even if they dont get along they will eventually mate. if you cant maintain them seperate you should consider getting rid of the female for a male
