How can i train my spanking new kid finches?
ok, well i have 4 baby finches (3 days old) surrounded by the nest. ( i breed finches) And i want to train them to trust me and take food from me and sit on my finger. All my birds (parrot, cockatiel, and parakeets are trained) except the finch family. and i am giving 2 to my BFF and she requests me to help her train them. How should we start? Will they be tame enough to take around the house? How long will it take? And i know its possible cuz my aunt had a tame finch. please support. im chosseing a best answer fast so be quick! Thanks yahoo people!
finches can be handtame, its harder for them to learn compared to budgies and cockatiels, they are smaller quantity trusting and understanding of humans, check out http://www.parrotcentral.net/how_to_tame... for a good article on handtaming
You can either hand feed them (really, really rugged because they will need to be fed every 2 to 3 hours) or just spend abundantly of time with them -- when you're cleaning the nest, you can take them around in somewhat bag where they can still see everything, if the mother comes out of the nest for a while and she's ok next to you touching the babies, you can maybe play with them, etc.
Answers: The best approach for a finch to be tame enough to sit on a finger is usually through rearing them by mitt. Teaching them to feed from your hand (this does require quite a great deal of time as small birds like this feed a good number of times a day) is probably one of the best ways to bring under control them, and also talking softly gets them used to you and your voice.
I presume you are going to train all 4 finches? I enjoy read some speculation from a variety of sources on how a tame finch behaves is mixed next to less tame finches; some say they will prefer human company, while others articulate the finch will become less tame and join the other finches. Finches are terrifically much social birds and are happiest in a group.
Training a bird can take days or weeks; depending on the bird. I've found a few sources that look quite long-suffering:
