How do I get hold of my ducklings to trust me?
I bought two baby ducks and they seem afraid of me what should i do?
we are doing a project at college and we have to get the ducks to follow us around. We have a soft toy(duck) and you tie a rope around it, close to a leash and then eventually teach the duckling to follow it. basically newly any time that you are sitting down, hold onto the ducks or have them close to you so they get the idea of you. We maintain the toy duck in the cage with the ducklings so that they receive used to it. if the ducklings are used to the toy duck then just rob that around with you and the ducklings are likely to follow and then they will receive use to you as well.
I use to raise ducks before i moved to the city. I also worked within a camp for a friend and we use to get ducks every spring that would nest near the pond. We use to sit on the grass with our legs folded, never have your legs out because this makes you look much bigger to a touch tiny duck, and we would Just sit there and toss tiny pieces of bread out to the ducks where they could get it. Slowly after a few days we would Start tossing it closer to us, and eventually they would come right to us and drink from our hand. I also agree with the person who talk about using a small stuffed duck and putting it in their cage to sleep beside. They will get use to it, and then use a string to tie it to you and drag it behind you, the ducks will soon be following it and trusting you. We also use to pilfer a little kiddie pool, fill it with river and put the ducklings into it. They would have so much fun swimming that they would forget they were scared of us.
Answers: A ducks instinct is to disquiet anything that isn't another duck or something that is food .. I raise ducks and they are not a pet that can be cuddled. If you want one that will come up to you when you feed them and perhaps let you touch it, that is possible but to be able to hold one and own no fear of you, that will not be possible.
