Need relieve beside a plucking bird. PLEASE HELP.?
I have a Medium Sulfur crested cockatoo named Sunny. It's a male and explicitly the problem. He is about 5-7 and is breeding mode. He wont stop plucking his feathers on his legs, neck, and under his wing a bit. He is always trying to "do the naughty" with my hand and believes that I am his mate. He will bite/attack our other birds absent from me and is extremely jealous. If my real boy friend is around he will try all he can to attack him or yelp at him if he's close to me.
I need help to numeral out if there is a place that I can at least pet him. He plucks his feathers where on earth ever I pet him and I'm told some places will make his urges stronger...
We did get him a girl friend bird. but he didn't want anything to do with her and considered necessary to stay attached to me. Oh, and he also screams when I leave his sight for even a moment.. PLEASE HELP!!
My male Sun had similar issues even though he had a mate for 4 years. He would attack me & get me bleed whenever he saw me. I was afraid of him but he loved my son & never bit him. After the pair had eggs & babies be born he turned into the worlds sweetest bird. Petting on the back will heighten their urges or on top of head. This lately might be a phase he is going through or you might want to try a different female. He is frustrated & wants you for a mate so he needs a distraction.
I can help you with the picking of the feathers.you can buy this spray stuff called "Stop Pick Spray", its this bitter taste fluid that you spray on the bird so they stop picking their feathers :)

Answers: Once birds start to pluck it is really difficult to get them to stop. I have a male Goffin that bites his feathers past its sell-by date he doesn't pull them out. You can try adding wood for him to demolish and also there are two toys I buy from DrsFostersSmith.com. One is a ten inch circle that have cotton tied on it for the birds to pluck the other is again a metal circle covered in colored yarn. They are not cheap but have help my Cockatoo. And yes he is also trying to convince me that he would make a good mate. This is breeding season. It is rather a anguish to keep moving my hand. Thats the way it go. I do wish you luck. Cockatoos and African Greys do have more of a tendency to plucking etc. afterwards other birds
