Where do I start- Im thinking of getting chicks, but where on earth do i start?
Im thinking of getting chicks, but where do i start! Do I keep them indoors till they have get feathers? What do I feed them? What do I keep them in?
That's what she said!
if you've never had chickens since it may be an idea to start by getting some POL pullets?
Are you getting them as day old chicks, or hatch eggs?
You'll need an incubator, or large cardboard box with one of those warmness lamps. You feed them on chick crumbs, available reasonable cheap.
As for keeping them inside until they own feathers- don't take my word for it but, I think you keep them contained by incubator/box with heat lamp, till they are so heaps weeks old, not sure how many! But I presume it's a few weeks after they have first developped feathers. If they're with a broody hen, they'll look after themselves all you requirement to do is ensure the hen doesn't leave them and you change foods when they get elder, directions usually on packaging as to how old they chooks enjoy to be before moving them on to it.
Hope this helped, and Good luck!
Answers: i started of beside pol and would recomend it
but if u want to rearer some chicks its great watching them grow when i started i fitted a normal light into an hoary hamster cage with a dimmer switch i also put in a thermometer really they should be kept at 35c for their first week afterwards eack week 5c less till down to outside temp yes i keep my chicks underneath the light for 8 week they can start spending days out at about 4 week but not for the night they nurture on chick crumbs found at your local feed store then at 6 weeks move them on to growers pellets consequently once laying on to layers pellets
