Why do blue jays pick up a peanut, drop it, pick up another look around and drop it, and...?
keep right on doing this behavior? Are they worried that other birds will get their peanuts?(I know that they are very territorial..hence this press!!) Thanks!!
Why do women pick up a tomato and look at it and drop it and later pick up another tomato and drop it? Be it tomatoes, peanuts, cantaloupes, cukes, or whatever, birds are picky just like humans. Maybe it didn't smell right..lol.
These birds are neat to watch enjoy several around my home. They eat fruits nuts seeds insects and mice. They will hold nuts beside there feet to crack the shells with the bill. The peanut you offered be it cracked open or were they still in the shells ? Maybe this isn't the type peanuts they will chomp through and were they salted? This bird might dropped and tried another and could not get inside either so departed this source of food behind They horde foods surprised the bird didn't take and store some where. Try another type nut. This bird may drop to depart. This didn't happen so it tried another same results. Try taking from shell (if they were in a shell).
They first want to make certain it's safe to pick up. Then after they know it is, and it's too big, they are trying to break it up. Mother bird regurgitates its' food in order to nurture their young. It can't feed a whole nut to a child bird.
What they are doing is trying to brake it widen, by throwing it around, most birds to this, you know if you see common birds shaking a bit of bread around? They're trying to brake it up into beak sized pieces.
Answers: They are checking the wt of the peanut to see what one is the biggest and offers the most food. :)
