Why does my budgie eat its egg?
When my female budgie lays its egg and sits on it for a 1 or 2 weeks the next time you see it its not there and it laid its egg through adjectives the seasons now its spring and it still eats its egg or it could be the mannish budgie? Well I just want to the budgie to not eat its egg and have a tot budgie.
Its an unfertilized egg (remember there is no masculine in the cage so it wont be a little bird surrounded by there)
the budgie eats it to get all the calcium put money on that it spent making the egg. Its natural so dont worry about it!
Egg laying takes an IMMENSE amount of calcium out of the female bird's system. With repeated egg lay, the bird can become calcium deficient. To try to regain the lost calcium, the bird will pull calcium from it's bones. This is not something the bird does by itself. It is a natural process, one that can massacre the bird. If she is eating the egg, she is trying to replace lost calcium that is present in the eggshell.
Also, birds can become 'eggbound'. What that manner is, birds which constantly lay eggs can have a batch that do not come out of the bird. This is a deadly situation. The eggs must be removed underneath anesthesia. It is ALWAYS risky to put a bird under anesthesia.
Take your bird to a vet who specializes in birds. This bird needs bloodwork done to asses the calcium level and if supplements are warranted to prevent bone loss.
Maybe the egg didn't get fertilised?
It's not exceptional. Though I can't recall the exact reasoning of this behavior if you call a pet store they can notify you.
Answers: Since you mention a male I assume you have both a male and a feminine. Some birds will distroy infertile eggs and eat them but other birds just develope a problem of egg eating regardless of whether the eggs are fertle or not. Most often the culpret is the male though females some times do it as well. The best item you can do is remove the male from the cage once the eggs are layed. You can try reintroducing him after the chicks have hatch so he can help the female feed, but hang on to a careful eye on him at first to make sure he doesn't try to wound the chicks. That should tell you for sure which bird is the egg eater. If it is the male I would recommend housing him alone or beside another male and finding your female a new mate whether you want chicks as egg eaters shouldn't be encouraged to reproduce and sitting and raising chick alone also puts more stress on the female. If the eggs still disappear even after you remove the manly then the female is the culprit and the same item applies to her house her alone or with another female so she doesn't lay more fertile eggs.
Also on a side note whether your bird is laying more than a couple of clutches of eggs a season it can quickly deplete her calcium levels cause egg binding so make sure she has a perfect supplamental supply of calcium such as a cuttle bone
Fiona P,
Parakeets and Cockatiels eat their eggs when they don't have anything contained by there. Chickens do this too.
