Why does my masculine Barraband Parrot try to mate next to Cockatiels?
He is about 6 years old and was purchased beside a female of similar age from a Dealer.
They are both in a large hold with Cockatiels, Ringnecks and Redrumps and have ample nesting sites of various sizes.
The hen have been working in a nest but the male lone wants to associate with hen Cockatiels. This has very soon got to the extent that he is going into her nest (She eventually mated with another Cockatiel) and feed their young. No crossbreeds. He is now feeding the childlike that have left the nest.
The hen Barraband seems to hold given up. Help please.
Answers: Some species of parrots are just interested in species excluding their own. That's why you have crossbreeds in the first place (like the galah and cockatiel mix that happened a few years ago).
Have you tried putting the Barraband manly and female in a different cage by themselves? Perhaps that will solve things, since whether he continues to live with female cockatiels, his attention will be directed to them.
It is just make-up, if he cant have his own kind , any will do. You involve to separate the Barrabands to their own cage. Then he will turn his attention to his mate.
