i did not read the book; so i don't know just about its symbolism
i am guessing, even though it is imprisoned, it sings about life, etc. hoping soon it is no longer caged

I believe it sings as it is happy just to be alive and taken care of. Birds are beaming little critters.
Who cares as long as it sings it's beautiful song?
