Will a chicken hen crow whether underneath distress?
I thought it was a hen, but then it crowed when penned contained by small cage.
Some hens can crow. They can also have rooster tendency as well as mating other hens and agression too.
If under stress a hen will make adjectives sorts of weird & loud noises, could be an attempt to draw attention & save herself from exposure , this could perhaps at times sound like a rooster's crow ,awfully like but not quite.
I have be around poultry for a long time & know both their habits as well as idiosyncrasies but haven't nonetheless come across one with anything near a rooster's crow.I have read however that uncommon instances of crowing hens have been recorded ,hang on to an eye on yours she may well be the odd hen out .
I'm thinking it might be rooster, I have never heard a hen crow.
If there are no roosters within the flock a hen will start acting like and sometimes they do it anyway. So don't worry it's pretty mundane.
Answers: Chickens are surprisingly vocal. They will cluck, whirr, growl, chirp and even "purr" when content. They have unshakable vocalizations that warn others in the flock of danger - and even enjoy different sounds for danger on the ground or danger from the sky. I never appreciated the complexity of their communications amongst themselves until I owned them.
Before we started keeping roosters for breeding, I only have hens. My one little mille fleur hen woke up one day and began crowing - and it sounded remarkably like a rooster! I be so surprised that I had the breeder who sold her to me come over and hear her - and even she was impressed. Said she had never hear a hen sound so much like a rooster in her energy. And she's most definitely a girl - lays eggs nearly every day.
Sometimes hens may have rather too much testosterone, or she might be making a distress squawk that sounds like a crow. Unless you have a young unsexed bird, I'd right to be heard it's possible that your hen is expanding her vocalization. But I'd have to say that if she's pen by herself, she is making that noise because she's definitely not happy in the region of her new living arrangement!
