Will my Sammy be ok when i paint?
I am going to paint my apartment and will be using latex paint, will my cockatiel "SAMMY" be ok?
I would watch out if it is the whole apartment, maybe you could board him at a friend for the time. If it is only one room then put him in another room. Try to draw from enough ventilation going so any fumes will leave. Birds are outstandingly sensitive to fumes. When a Teflon Pan is heated to a high degree it will send out fumes that would eliminate a bird, where as we might not even smell them.
not so certain but to take safe cautions u might want to appropriate the bird out of the appartment and into probably a friends house. I dont think the paint will harm the bird because they use latex gloves around them for certain purposes , but later the fumes my be a little overwelming for an animal of small size. (Just like humans walking into a freshly painted room "May cause a headache")
Answers: The compounds in paint that cause chemical odors are called VOCs. The smaller amount VOC in paint the less odor and safer it is. Home Depot has a paint next to no VOC. Here's a site on it.. We have also had very polite luck with Behr paint also from Home Depot. (I have no connection near HD. They just happen to have flawless paint)

If you already have your paint try to keep the bird as far away from the fumes as possible till no odor is adjectives. If you can keep windows open--great.
Most paint cans hold a toll free customer service number on it or a web site where you can ask questions. They will notify you if it is safe for birds. They dont want to get sued.
I would be extremely with any fumes around a pet bird. Things that do not bother us are very lethal to birds. That is why the put the canaries in the coal mines. The canaries would die from inhaling dangerous fumes before ancestors would. I would suggest looking for the emergency phone number on the side of the paint can and calling them. They have to know abou this type of thing.
