Wing clipping my african grey?
My african grey is 5 months old and recently turned nasty towards my mum who is near for this bird more than me. She's there all of the time while im at school.
When he be very young (still being mitt reared) my mum went away for two weeks and obvously he was beside me the entire time, not sure if this has anything to do next to it.
He also flys on our heads all of the time which is very irritating. Is it cruel to receive his wings clipped, will it hurt him, and will it calm him down :)
He sees you as mommy bird
Have you & your mom had an argument I don`t know in front of him without thinking
He could see your mom as a threat to you and hence to his survival
Having the wings clipped is not cruel it basically stops then getting really airborn they can still flutter strong enough to soften a landing from any hight contained by your room
If you decide to clip the wings yourself make certain you hold the wings spread out up to a light window or something you will see the blood vessel running towards the end of the feather stem
Clip about a quarter of an inch departed that to avoid bleeding they don't feel a thing
Good luck
If you do settle on to clip his wings, have a vet do it for the first time so it is done properly.
Wing Clipping doesn't always abet or calm a bird down, sometimes it makes the problems worse by associating you with deletion its means of flight. Birds go by a motto of "fight or flight" and when you nick away their means to take flight, they will other choose to fight. Which means... bite.
You should instead use your bird's ability to fly to your positive aspect and try flight training;

Flight training can create some of the strongest bonds between you and your bird and it's something your mom can do with your bird.
Good luck!
Trimming the wings, will hang on to him from flying, he will still try until he learns he can't fly.. all the vet. does is clip behind the first 4 feathers of respectively wing. that's how they do my amazon. when Kiwi tried to be mean to someone else I used a spray bottle and sprayed him toward the face and told her no.. She at first hated the spraying but immediately loves it. The only person she tries to bite is my daughter because my daughter picked on her and she will fluff her feathers and bite. Hope I have help in small way ..good luck beside your bird.. they train easy.. like to use the bathroom on command. mine talk alot and sings along next to the tv. running water helps like a fish cistern etc.
You should be very punctilious when doing this and it should be only done by a vet or it can permanently damage wing spike growth,it would be better to get a leg chain and perch or the bird has freedom but cannot capture into trouble or get a very big cage and do session training till the bird is mediator and more confident.I had a african grey for 37 years a mad hen bird!
Definitely clip his wings. It will keep him safer in your house and it doesn't hurt- it's a short time ago like clipping a finger nail. There are lots of books and websites that will explain exactly how to do it.
its not cruel, the feathers will grow back, do it while he is young and it really help cos it makes the bird more dependent on you and your mother. also clip both wings its cruel to clip one cos they can land properly and will injury themselves.
Answers: It is not cruel to clip a birds wings, most of the time it is cruel for the sanctuary of the bird. I have treated many a bird for very serious injuries from flying into things close to walls, windows, mirrors, ceiling fans, toilets, hot stoves.and some end up dying of broken neck. It may seem "cute" for your bird to fly around the house, but it can be very dangerous. It is NOT crucial for a bird to have any free flight as long as they have a cage substantial enough so they can flap their wings a lot in need the wings touching either side of the cage. If you don't know how to do it, thieve your bird to the vet and have him show you how to do it, and be sure to keep his wing clipped at all times. It is not cruel.it is cruel not to prevent injury. Your bird is most likely just going through hormonal change. If a bird is socialized properly, they will not have a preference in who handle them. This is something that people have a misconception about.surrounded by fact they associate certain birds as having this trait, and it is not true. Even birds, such as quakers, who are set to have aggressive behavior, can be trained to go to anyone if you do it right. Please read my profile
Yes it is cruel to have his wing clipped birds are intended to fly. He would be best keep in a very substantial avairy with a mate. Can you imagine being hang on to on your own for all your life never meeting another human self .
I wouldn't do it myself I don't conjecture its natural to restrict a birds flight. It must be very frustrating for them and feathers may or may not grow back but read this first to help out you make your decision.

no its not cruel and it will not hurt as long as you hold someone who knows how to clip wings do it. if they win clipped too short they can bleed. it should calm him down because he will now be more dependant on you.
Wing clipping can be a waste of time it individual takes about 3-4 weeks for them to grow back, but it can relieve you to calm them down, i had ours done recently for the moment time as he was dive bombing us in breeding season it did work he then become calm again.
This is not cruel to clip the wing ! Nor will it hurt him. of course it will calm him down he thinks he is within control
I know you asked another question about biting of which I answered so please read that about the largeness factor to keep your bird from thinking he is in control..
BUT
Knowing that I would clip the wing. It is also for safety .. what would do whether someone opened the door and the bird decided to take a flight .. you could loose him..
I have 2 Scarlet Macaws and a Blue and Gold along with a cockatiel and 3 parakeets for pets... all at a different time so no one jump up and down .,..all had the wing clips
Any well well-read Avian Vet will tell you to !
But please make sure a Vet does this the first few times so you can see how this is done next in the future you can do this... Normally all the feathers are cut on the wing EXCEPT the blood spine!
EDIT: Christine C you are wrong with all due respect
You said
"Wing clipping can be a waste of time it solely takes about 3-4 weeks..."
