2 cats and 1 american bulldog?
In a few months Im going to moving in with my wonderful boyfriend. The only problem: I own 2 black and white Tuxedo cats, and he has an American female bulldog (who doesnt have any manners and isnt trained). The dog is pen up when no one is home to watch her but Im still worried.
Whats the best process to introduce my 2cats who have never seen a dog ever (they are indoor) to a dog whos never seen a cat? Im really worried nearly the safety of my kitties!
Well we a short time ago got a 2 yr. old pit/boxer mix and he is NOT USED to cats.although we have 2 other dogs that we've have for 2 years so the cats are used to it. Cats are VERY smart and will run and hide for awhile if the dog is around. It will take a long time for everyone to really catch along, but it is definitely doable. You must have ALOT of patience. After 5 months of getting our first 2 dogs one of the cats permit them lick all over him. Just give it time, and don't force any unwanted situations. This pit we just get shivers and acts like he wants to lunge at the cats whether they come around but we are keeping him on a leash right now to get used to them and it's ONLY supervised. When we aren't home the pup is crate trained and we put a blanket over the crate so he doesn't know whether the kitties come in the room and he feels authentic safe.
This may be a difficult situation. Number 1 train doggie, a happy dog is a trained dog. Dogs are resembling children they need boundaries, and eating kitties is a no no. To introduce them head off the cats in a specific room. Let the dog sniff the cats through the door, while having control over the dog. slowly as time goes on break open the door more and more, until they are comfortable with each other. This cause take time unfortunately, which means you may hold to keep the litter box and food in the same room as the cats until they are comfortable near the dog and you are confident that the dog wont eat the cats. Be patient you don't want any mishaps that are going to cause you and your boyfriend to disagree. Like if dog eats cat or cat scratches dogs eye out.
Answers: Oh dear, I'd be worried for my cats too ! If this dog isn't trained she is very unlikely to adopt cats into her home and as your cats have never met a dog, they are going to freak right out ! It will be bad satisfactory for them adjusting to a move to a home where they will own to share you.You are going to have to keep them apart and be on your guard and patient for a long long time, introducing them slowly and never ever departure them shut in together.
At one time we had a collie dog and 2 cats, we were never competent to leave them alone together, the dog was fine most of the time with the cats but next he'd suddenley lunge.I really don't envy you living on that knife edge !
Good luck
