Adopting A Cat Help ..? ?
:D I am getting a cat! I am so excited,
I am adopting a cat from the Toronto Humane Society.
Can someone please tell me about their experience give or take a few adopting a pet from a pound ect.
What kind of selection do they hold?
Do they have kittens aswell?
Thanks so much.
What they hold changes on a daily basis. I'd of late say, it doesn't matter if it's a kitten or a cat, but whether you pick it up, and it purrs, and tries to touch noses with you, that's the one for you !
Get two if you can ! Kitties are fun to see playing with each other, chasing balls next to bells in them or playing keep away beside a catnip mouse, or jumping for the feathers on the end of a fishing pole line made for cats.
Of course they're also wonderful, keeping you melt by laying on your lap, or sleeping curled up next to you :) Plus you won't hold mice in the house !
Lucky you !! I've rescued out lots of kitties, they're grateful for new homes. If they're elder, they take time to adjust.
You are so devout for doing that. I've adopted several from Humane Societies. They have whatever population turn in from kittens to adults who were also abandoned or turned within because the owners could no longer afford to shelter or feed them due to finances or illness.
Spend some time there and pet the kitty before deciding. Believe me, there is one that will want to adopt YOU and consent to you know it.
Males are more affectionate, just in case you similar to to cuddle. Some females don't like to be picked up and fussed over. That's why you need to kind of hang up out there for awhile and find a kitty appropriate for you and your personality.
Answers: A Humane Society is the best place to adopt a cat. They will have hundreds of animals to pick from, and you can hold them and play with them so you know which one is the right cat for you. I'm certain they will have several kittens. Cats that you adopt from there are already spayed/neutered, dewormed, and vaccinated so it will gather you a lot of trouble.
Congratulations and enjoy your new cat!
Hello! Thank You so Much for adopting a cat from a humane society. All the answers are good ones, and terribly true.
Every humane society is different. They have different rules on adoption (ex, only to ppl over 21, only to indoor homes, after checking reference, etc). Check out the Toronto Humane Society Webpage and find out what their adoption requirements are and bring the necessary information to fill out the paperwork, or if available, download the adoption application and swarm it out before you go :) Makes life natural.
As for the cats, before going, figure out what kind of cat you want, a long haired, shorthaired, youthful, old, lap cat, aloof, etc. Its so easy to hike into a humane society and end up with a cat who doesn't fit your lifestyle, although, it might not matter, because cats tend to adopt you.
As for inspection, I suspect you can get almost any kind of cat identity you want and in all the colors of the rainbow. You might even find a purebred or two, although purebred cats don't show up at shelters as often as purebred dogs.
I've other had good experiences with adopt from shelters, and would do so again.
Also, the Toronto Humane Society Webpage can be found Here: http://www.torontohumanesociety.com/
Good Luck!
They will have different breeds and types of cats for you to choose from. Just be sure to ask A LOT of questions about the type of self the cat has, how up to date they are on shots and what medical problems the cat may have or has be tested for. Be sure to have your own personal vet evaluate your cat after adopting it. Sometimes when pets are adopt after being around other pets for long periods of time, they can spread viruses ( approaching a simple flu, or cold) that can be aggravated by the stress of being adopted and taken to a new domestic. Most of these can be cleared up over time, but the vet may need to help it along so be sure to take a look at your new pet for any sneezing or coughing.
Hope this is helpfull
Pounds are full of adjectives kinds of cats and kittens. It's really a sad place. When you go surrounded by, the cats will be in cages. You will be allowed to look at each one and some pounds enjoy a room where you can spend some time with a cat you choose. Please pay attention and know that most of the animals within will not make it out. They have only a jiffy before being either adopt or put to sleep. This could be avoided if people would spay/neuter their pets. I hope your trip to the pound finds you a great kitty and gives you a fresh outlook on animal welfare. I have adopted 4 kittens and cats from the pound and each one is extraordinarily special. It feels great to know you saved your cat's life. Please transmit everyone you know about your trip to the pound and tell them it could be made much better by having their pets fixed.
Allie, the cat contained by my avatar is one of my pound babies. She was just 6 weeks old when I found her.
As far as selection goes, most Humane Society's have comparatively a few cats to choose from.
Most have kittens too.
When you arrive at the shelter, make sure you enjoy lots of time to spend with the cats to look at their personality.
- If you want a shy, quiet, independent cat, look for one i.e. off to itself.
- If you like a people-person,friendly cat, look for the cat(s) that come up to you right away.
- If you would close to a cat that you want to hold and to be a lap cat, pick up the cat, stroke it, and see which cat likes it best.
Most shelters will give you somewhat bit of information on the cat's personality, but be sure that you look at this yourself too!
Before you bring the cat home, buy some:
- Cat food
- Bowls
- Cat Tower or something to climb on.
- Cat toys
They will probably have lots of different cats. Probably have kittens too! lately look at the cats. They adopt you.
