Any direction on bringing 2 neuter cats beneath 5 years of age to tranquil co-habitation within domestic of one of them?
I am spending a year or so looking after elderly family member in her own domestic. She has a cat, and so have I. So far only flying fur and fang when we've tried initial visits with mine at the new house. What to do?
When my roommate got a cat (and I already had one), we put the newcomer contained by the bathroom for the first few days with everything he needed. That way they could sniff each other through the door and find used to each other.
That way the initial pet won't feel the "invasion" so much - it will still be "his house" until he is used to the perception of another. Then start letting the newbie out a few minutes at a time (supervised of course).
I haven't done this for years but I used the same method as I do introducing a new kitten. I keep the unsullied cat in the guest bedroom and the cats interact under the door. Then I lock the resident cats in another bedroom and permit the newcomer run around the house smelling everything and learning the layout of the house. I do this a few times then put my cats in the guest bedroom while the other cat is out so they can smell his nouns. After about 5-7 days they can be together and eventually learn to tolerate each other. If they wind up up getting along it's a real plus but sometimes they will never be close. Good luck.
Answers: Fights are inevitable to hot cats entering the territory of another, usually, though, they will work out a hierarchy beside time.
If you want to try another method (than just throwing them all into the house), try putting the new cat within a kennel cab and let the other one (who owns the house) get a luck to get used to the smell and presence of the newcomer. This way, the new cat poses no threat on the other because they don't enjoy free run of the house. Eventually, you may open the door to the kennel and let the cats slowly interact. Persistance and patience are switch.
Another way of introducing them is to put the new cat in another room next to the door shut. Maybe in a bathroom (with his own litterbox, food, and water). This way the cats can communicate and again get used to the smell and presence of the other but they don't own to chance to get into a tiff.
Eventually, though, they will learn to tolerate one another (even whether they never fully get along). Just takes time.
Good luck with your kitty!
