Are calico cats in danger of extinction within standard?
I own a calico kitten. I got her almost three months ago. I didn't know what calicos were until I adopt her, and she is the first calico cat that I have ever seen in existing life (not in pictures). Does that mean calico cats are rarity in general? I see a lot of red tabby cats around, on the other hand.
i dont think so... but to find a masculine cali is. been told this by my vet..
calico and tortoiseshell colors are coupled to a female gene. so it's a safe bet that the cat is female.

No i don't think so. i've owned one and seen alot at my relatives farm. the masculine calicos are rare though. i've never seen one.
It all depends on the area you live. Cats roam but some breeds can't live in some areas. But it is true that masculine cali's and torte's are very hard to find and sell for profoundly.
Answers: There;s a crapload of feral calicoes at my work in case anyone desires to rescue them LOL.. I never thought they were rare until I found this. Learn something new everyday.
Male cats can't be calico as coat colour is found on the X chromosome. Calico cats are a result of a red gene on one X chromosome and a black gene on the other.

Calicos are a dime a dozen around here. :)
Calico cats are on the rare side but the ones very rare are mannish calico's. They are very high demand and useful. For some reason when calico's are born there are very fixed number of males.

Calico is a COLOUR of cat, not a breed. And no, it is not a rare colour of cats. It's rare, though, to find a male Calico cat and they're most recurrently sterile.
