Cats and Christmas trees?

I just put up my christmas tree today and my cats have be checking it out all day. I'm concerned because its fake and it have the lights already on it. I have noticed one of them nibbling on it and the other one have been chewing on it. It wasn't a expensive tree so im not really worried about buying a new one but im afraid one of them is going to swallow the plastic leaves on it and or capture electrocuted. I have tried the spray bottle and it works for one cat but the other does not care. How can i keep consequently away from it?
Cats are not dumb enough to eat plastic. They probably resembling the feel of the texture on their teeth and gums. Maybe it is helping to clean their teeth. But do be careful next to the electric lights. Only turn the tree on when you are there watching. Don't leave it on unattended.
I'm kind of controlling. All of our cats have never been interested in the tree. It's fun to examine them play with it. Some even climb the tree (and knock it over - lol).
I would go to the pet store and get apple bitter spray. If you want to try something until you get the unpredictability to get that spray, try taking lemon juice and dilute it with dampen, then spray that all over the tree. Or if you own a body spray like bath and body works spray that has material citrus in it, try that. Also, hot chilli powder works on houseplants so I am sure that would work, but its sort of messy. I would unplug the lights until you take thinking of the issue so that they don't start a fire or get electrocuted. A few plastic leaves probably won't kill them. I know my cat ate many and be fine until I finally got the apple bitter spray.
Get rid of the tree and buy a real one.
Last year when my cat was just a kitten a neighbour suggested I take an old pickel jar, or jam jar, and fill it a short time less then half channel full, whenever my kitten came near the tree I would shake the jar really hard and it would startle the beegeezies out of him. It took a couple days but soon enough he barely went essential it.doenst hurt to try?
Answers:    Oh boy, this is classic at Christmas. Try a bit of bitter apple on the branches they can reach. If possible, you could put some double sided sticky tape on the floor around the tree. This might discourage them long adequate for it to become a habit to avoid that area. My cat never minded the water any, lol. He just looked at me as if to ask if I be finished squirting him. What did work, was grabbing a sheet of newspaper or tin foil and making a loud reverberation with it, saying "back". For some reason, "NO" simply doesn't cut it near cats.
good luck i have found nothing that works. whether they did bite into a light i don't think it would hurt too bad, my daughter be three and bit one, and she didn't do it again.
You can't keep them away from it unless you put it in a closed rotten room. You can buy bitter apple spray which makes things taste terrible and apply it to the tree and street light cords.
