Cats and the christmas tree?
Since the holidays are coming up soon, does anyone have any good advice or tips on how to hang on to the cats from climbing/attacking the christmas tree? I had an artificial one that was completely destroyed 2 years ago, and last year get a real one, which they wanted to climb and viewed adjectives the ornaments as toys.
either keep the cat out of the room next to the tree in it. or you could get the cat removed the claws. do what you think is best for the cat.
I celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. When my cats were kittens, one was climbing the tree while the other burned his tail on the menorah. Ah, holidays!
If you want to discourage a behavior (such climbing the tree), try keeping a shrill whistle handy and blow it whenever the cat make a move to do the forbidden thing. Their sensitive ears don't like the sound. After a few whistle, they tend to figure out that they can avoid this noise by avoiding the behavior. However, sometimes, they just HAVE to climb that tree, anything the consequences.
If yours are especially determined, you might just want to buy a bunch of cheap plastic ornaments.
Good luck, and merry Christmas!
Answers: Unless you put the tree in a closed off room, you will drive yourself crazy fighting next to your cats. All those sprays and things have never worked on my cats. I just get a cheap tree, string on some locked ornaments, and let them have at it. It gets better as they procure older but I somehow manage to always own at least one kitten at Christmastime (I rescue). Having shabby looking Christmas trees is just one of those things cat owners have to adopt.
We have a cat and a dog. "Walker" is of the mind that the Xmas tree is his personal property and he won't let the cat in close proximity it. If he catches the cat near the tree he puts her down and gnaws on her stomach until she leaves the room. I love that dog.
We have not lost a single ornament yet. We still won't put tinsel on the tree, though. That is freshly too tempting and too dangerous for a cat to get hold of.
Ive had this same press for years! :) I have had the same problem near my cats tearing up my tree. It usually only last a day if that. Once my 2 cats got elder htey became uninterested. But then we get a stray that we adopted, a kitten of course, and round 2 started all over again! I have to just put decorations from the middle of the tree and up, nothing on the bottom. Of course our tree is not very appealing. So I've almost decided to not even put one up this year. But I dont have small children at domestic anymore. I just get tired of cleaning up broken decorations and worrying about my kitty choking on CHristmas decorations.
Edit: Someone said something about declawing your cat.My cats are declawed and it doesnt matter nor do it make a difference. So declawing simply for the saftey of a Christmas tree is not the answer.
Good Luck
We had two cats who were slice of the Christmas Tradition.to climb the tree and play with the balls. We did everything to keep them stale the tree...my Dad finally said " the heck with it."
We have a spray bottle next to the tree. Everytime they would get under it we would pick up the bottle and they would run. They did mess near it while we were sleeping though and we often woke up with broken bulbs until we put tot gate around it.
