Does my cat have need of another rabies shot?
my cat just got one in may and she get a bad cut on her back that required surgery and the vet gave her another rabies shot.I don't see why she have one(3yr one) to protect her and if a cat did get rabies the shot won't stop it if infected(will it) idk i live within md so idk if laws are different in respectively state
The 3 year shot lasts a full three years. I don't know why they'd supply her another.
Are you sure it was a rabies shot and not an antibiotic shot? I'd question the vet as to why. The cat's antibodies should be fully ok against rabies whether she just got one in May.
There is not enough information to adequately answer. If she was treated, and did not own her tag, or the vet did not have her records, it might own been required. However, in most rabies prone States, a vet cannot treat a cat for an injury of unknown origin in need verifying a rabies vaccination.
However, three year rabies shots are normally solely given to cats who remain indoors at all times. And if your cat was remarkably young, there may have be a presumption of incomplete protection. Kittens normally start out with a one year shot, and then can procure a three year shot.
While the effectiveness of rabies shot protection is often longer than the law allows, shifting the rules to reflect current practices is often impossible.
Answers: Your cat shouldn't of needed a second rabies shot. The vet may of given it if they were concerned that the cut could of come come from a rabid animal (another cat or rat/bat/etc), but I've never run into one who handle it like that.
Call your vet and ask them why they gave her a second shot. Only they will be capable of answer that for you.
