There are more than 500 million domestic cats surrounded by the world, with 33 different breeds.
There are currently over 70 breeds of cats recognized by one cat registry or another.
The IPCBA (International Progressive Cat Breeders Alliance) recognizes 73 elegant breeds, while the more conservative CFA (Cat Fanciers' Association) gives the nod to only 41. Developing and registering a new breed of cats is a long, involved progress, and not every attempt is successful. For example, the CFA steadfastly refuse to admit cats bred from "wild stock," such as the Bengal, or the Savannah, although these breeds are both accepted by TICA and IPCBA.

Between the major registries here are about 45 to 50 recognised breeds. There are a further 30 or so experimental breeds, some of which may gain full recognition and other will fail.
The Cat Fanciers' Association, (CFA) which is the largest registry for pedigree cats, recognize 40 breeds. As follows in alphabetical order:
