What's the best channel to tutor a kitten not to munch through race food?
I have 2 cats, one is a 3 years old, and the other is 3 months old. The elder cat has never liked people food, so it hasn't be something I had to worry about...but the foreign kitten seems to get into everything, including our food.
I've thought about feed her people food that cats hate to discourage her (any suggestions?). I'm looking for a way OTHER than simple reprimands or the marine gun method (because she doesn't learn from water...she comes right back)
The best thing you can do is never let her chomp through any of your food. Cats will eat something they normally would hate, purely because they see you eating it.
Best way is to keep the food out of her arrive at.
If water doesn't work, do the "noisy can" trick. Get an empty can, a soda can works fine, and put some little objects within it - stones, nails, screws, coins - stuff that will fit. Don't fill it full, roughly speaking a quarter to a third full is fine. Seal the opening. Shake the can at the cat making lots of noise. The loud noise should startle her away.
Answers: I agree, you should keep everything out of her get. If you are consistent, she will lose interest once she gets out of the super curious kitten stage.
You could try a command like "mine". I use that for things that I don't want my cat to get into, but are non-hazardous, so I can save the super scary "no" for dangerous things. I started next to taking the thing and holding it possessively while saying "mine". After a few repetitions she just vanished it alone, and now it only takes once or twice. However, this worked great on one cat, and not at adjectives on the other. Maybe one views me as the dominant cat and the other doesn't?
