Why do my cats hang on to running absent from strangers?
I have had 2 cats (both from the same litter) for nearly 3 years very soon so they are fully grown adult cats. However since we have had them and even immediately they still run away and hide whenever we have friends come to the house as the cats don't know them. They will stay unobserved until the friends have gone. Does anyone know what I can do to try and make them less tense of new people and get them to mingle more?
Well, you might make them angry whether you push them too much. But try having your friends give the cats a treat if they will rob it. Maybe it will loosen them up and help them realize your friend aren't there to harm them.
Another piece could be all the noise/movement. I am sure your house may be somewhat quiet when it's basically you and the cats. So when they are used to a quiet environment, having friends over may scare them.
Many cats are similar to that. It has taken me almost 3 years to get my sisters cats to come up to me. And it took coming next to cat treats each time.
My cat on the other hand hasn't met a stranger she won't come right up to. Since I hardly receive visitors at my house it isn't that she's used to lots of them all the time.
Each cat is different. Have your friends ignore them until the cats start coming up close to them. Then distribute your friends cat treats to toss towards the cats closer each time. The cats will learn that your friends are ok, one friend at a time.
cats are like that... dont receive them mingle if they dont want to...
My cats are like way. When we go out of town it's my grandmother that has to babysit them while we are gone. If she is contained by the house, they will not come out of hiding. They do this even if we are home and she is there at impossible to tell apart time.
Even if they hear a vehicle pulling into the driveway and do not recognize it as mine or my parents, they run and hide.
If the cats do not option to be around strangers, don't make them. Perhaps they sense something. Animals have a God given instinct on knowing who to trust and who they can't.
Answers: There unused to that person as you spend time with them. Gradually introduce your cats to your friends and then tolerate the cat sniff the friends hand don't force the cat to sniff the hand though. Maybe get your friends to come round not everyday but comparatively a lot so the cats can get used to them and just relax
My cat does this. He hides under the bed in the smallest place so you cant procure him and stays there until visitors leave. There isnt much you can do. You are designed to when the cat is a kitten make sure they have as much interaction next to other people so when they grow up they arent scared of people.
Maybe they had some previous bad memories...cats are suspicious sometimes
Most cats are like this. Unless they grow up with strangers coming contained by and out of the house daily.
My 2 do the same, run for cover when my family visit.
there scared dont know who them populace are..
I consider your cats are playing hide and seek.

Normally, when your friends pop in, are they loud? Cats don't like loud strange things.
Have your guests sit down and be quiet (they can talk freshly not loud lol) and bring your cats out. Have your friends pet them and give them treats.
Maybe they are drunk
We hold a 14 year old cat who does the same thing. We have a 7 year old cat that died about 6 months ago from a tumor but he taught her to do it as okay. We prefer it that way. Our old boy has it down to such a fine science that he literally re-appears as the door is closing (when company is leaving). He come from an abusive home so I believe he does it because he hates everyone (except us) since he have trust issues .but some cats just arent social creatures. They love their owners but alot of people around stresses them out. We have a kitten very soon, he doesnt do it yet but our 14 year old cat will probably teach him how to squirrel away when company arrives.
haha weird.
