Why does my cat guzzle grass?
I've never seen her do that before. It's not cat nip. She's 17 and has kidney damp squib.
Why is she eating grass?
Because it helps to digest the food she eats more properly, especially since she have kidney failure and it prevents her from vomiting and having hairballs. All cats do that, so don't worry, it's commonplace. =)
Cats have a natural desire to consume greens, especially when they own indigestible material in their digestive tract, such as hairballs. Unfortunately (from the human owner's point of view), the therapeutic importance of the grass is not to make the matter pass through their system, but to help out them throw it up.
I had one cat who was "trained" to throw up on paper instead of the hearth rug. I was pleased, but could not fully appreciate this "trick" until he had passed away at a ripe ripened age and I got two kittens, who did not learn the same skill.
To hold on to hairballs to a minimum, under a vet's advice I regularly give my cats petroleum jelly. Just a small amount, 1-3 times a week. If I forget for a while and one of them throws up a hairball, after I give them petroleum jelly every day for three days to clear their system.
Mine are indoor cats with no access to grass, but I wonder whether yours might eat less grass if you started regular hairball treatment. You might want to ask the vet for direction.
Answers: Cats do not possess the ability to separate meat from fur bones or feathers before consumption like we do so they have to eat the digestible parts along near the indigestible parts. When the cat has finished digesting what he can the rest has to be removed from the system. To try and pass this through the digestive tract could grounds obstruction and severe illness so this is where grass ingestion comes in. The habit of eating grass triggers the colloquial process of regurgitation of indigestible foods including its own fur balls which would otherwise obstruct the system. This can appear to us humans as if the cat is man violently ill but this is not the case and within fact is very beneficial to the cat.
Hope that help! =)
cats are natural grass lovers.
