A puppy for the Holidays?

A few days ago I made a poster that I had the intention of posting at our local "puppy selling" pet store, just to spite them. So this Pet store has be selling Ori-Pei's which just about makes me want to throw up...because they're recounting people that it is a new breed. I've decided that it's very soon my job to inform the people that come into Petsmart (where I work as a groomer) that it is NOT a breed. But I digress because I'm getting pissed off again nearly it...
So after this encounter with the Ori Pei owners I went home and made a poster next to four dogs on it who were euthanized on Thanksgiving Day at a kill shelter. And I put a small paragraph above it saying something resembling "I was euthanized on Thanksgiving because of irresponsible breeders and pet stores who sell puppies to impulsive buyers. Please Spay/Neuter your pets and impart a life to one who might otherwise lose it". So after further thought I decided that it might not be very forceful at the Pet store since they'll probably tear it down quickly and it might also be illegal. My friend and I want to dispatch out mass letters to the surrounding towns with a similar message while also mentioning the issues with gifting puppies for Christmas.
Has anyone ever done something close to this before? How did they go about it? What did yours enunciate and was there any response from the community? Is this even appropriate?
most petshops have a bullitin board where on earth people can post ads for their lost/found pets, and pets for sale, and other pet-related ad.. I see NO reason why you cant post something like that there? If someone can post an hoarding for $1,000 crap-a-poo puppies, then you can post something about shelter dogs!
I agree with your points but a more cost effective way might be to filch out an advertisement in a newspaper. Or even a note to the editor. When I saw the first line of this I thought you were going to get a pet simply for the holidays which is something I also wish people would not do.
Good for you!! Spread the word about puppy mills! I know how you feel, it can be so frustrating! So many silly people out there who just want a puppy for the fun of it and enjoy no idea how much work they are. I go to a local pet store and just stand inside and report potential buyers about the puppies and where they came from. I also relay them about the dogs at the shelter that I volunteer at. It seems to be pretty effective. Keep up the honourable work!
just get fliers and put them in stores that have the cork board and had them out surrounded by the parking lot .All they can do is make you leave the parking lot if its a store by its self.whether its in a Mini mall they cant do sh(a)(a). If the cops come just move to the store subsequent door.
Answers:    I was an assistant organizer at my local humane society for 8 years. I finally left cause I felt I would stir mad. There are so many ignorant nation! I was known for my heated articles I submitted to the local newspaper, explicitly how I got things off my chest and vented. I would propose doing that but be careful and try to be somewhat tactful. Slandering is against the law. Just inform the public in need mentioning any names. I wouldn't use pictures of euthanized animals, if your message is too "raw" it will turn people stale and they won't listen. Instead try pulling at heart strings in more subtle ways. Maybe write an article from the puppy's viewpoint and make it really offended.
Well, none of those answers above me were very helpful. I assume what you did was a good eye opener and I devise that you should post it!
PUPPY!

I can understand both sides... I get why people similar to to buy puppies from breeders and pet stores. Its because they know the puppy's health conditions, they know where it came from, and like mad of people like pure breds.

But I totally get your side too- I used to work at an animal shelter, and it kill me to see innocent puppies/dogs get euthanized for no reason.

So although it would be great whether everyone stopped buying from breeders and stores, its just not going to happen any time soon. As much as that sucks, its true. If you want to take a stand on it, I close to your poster idea. Make posters that say your thoughts on the subject... its just probably not a obedient idea to bash other businesses. You could probably get into trouble for that.

Hope I helped, jolly holidays.
I think it is horrible that animals have to be the harmless victims of irresponsibility. A lot of people don't think of a new pet as a long-term commitment. Owning a pet is a responsibility, not a freshness. Shelters are filled to capacity with unwanted dogs and cats. There are even more animals that aren't within shelters. So many strays roaming the streets were once pets.

I think it's typical for folks to not care about issues they don't know much about. Sometimes it take a lesson in harsh reality to get hold of people to pay attention. That's why activism is so important. What you want to do is a great perception in my opinion. I think the best passageway to go about it is by handing out flyers. You hold a good chance of losing your job whether you hand out material on company property so it's best to go elsewhere. From what I get the message, it's not against the law to distribute flyers. You should speak someone familiar with the law in the area you want to target so you know your rights before you procure started. Good luck.
I've never seen nor heard of something like this previously. It's great for what you are doing for the community and I'm not quite sure if it's legitimate. There's no harm in going to the nearest police department and asking if it's possible to speak your intellect. I mean, it is part of the Constitution that every American citizen has the freedom of speech. It's wonderful for what you are doing for adjectives of those poor puppies that may end up in a kill shelter sooner or subsequent. I doubt that the police department would force you to stop what you are doing. It's kindda like a strike, well maybe not pretty but close enough
who doesnt want a puppy (:
If you put it up in a pet store that does not sell these puppies, likely the with the sole purpose people that will see it already know about kill shelters and are loving, mostly responsible pet owners who do not contribute to your problem. I own posted pleas for help to rescue pets from our animal shelter to my mothers group and all my friends. Also, a well worded inference letter to your newspaper is a great gift to provide your community in regards to this issue at this (or any) time of year.

Good luck. Sorry I don't know the legal issues but I right to be heard...contribute in any way you can. I do know that if you plan on hand out fliers, you will not want to place them in peoples mail boxes as you cannot legally do that.
