Border Collies living within towns?
Can anyone tell me exactly how well the average Border Collie could bar living in a town, as long as they got sufficient exercise? I live in a typical big town in the UK, although plenty of beaches & countryside is right nearby. How would the Collie button the traffic & people?
BCs can do well in the city IF you are committed to getting the dog tons of exercise, training and mental stimulation surrounded by the form of a job to do. It is definitely more of a challenge to enjoy a BC in a city setting and you will be busting your butt to make sure the dog is joyful or you will have a bored dog, that becomes obsessive and destructive.
We hold a border collie right in our town. She is well trained to stay in her courtyard, although we don't ever let her out without someone out with her. We hold a fairly large yard for her to play within (they love fetch), and she gets most of her exercise that way. A fence would be just what the doctor ordered, but we can't afford it, so she just isn't out unsupervised. She knows come, stay, and get surrounded by your yard. The easiest way was to consent to her play, and when she got close to the edge of the yard, we'd bequeath her a corrective noise, tell her to stay in her patio, and come. She got to know her borders pretty quickly. They are VERY smart, so expect to try to entertain a LOT! Good luck!
Answers: I have owned collies for years, and had them living next to me all over the place, from Portsmouth and the New Forest and now in Rural Northumberland. The Collie is a superb dog and adapt well to most environments providing they get enough stimulation and exercise.
Most folks when asked will say a collie is boisterous and extremely active, i disagree, it's all down to the indivdual dog. I hold a 10 yr old ** who has never been into walking for miles or chasing a toy and i enjoy a 2 year old who never sits still! Any loving home with access to a clothed space for a good walk (beach, park etc) in my assessment is suitable. Never had any probs with traffic , providing the dog has be socialised around traffic etc from an early age, you should have no problems, hope this helps
they are great town dogs as long as they achieve enough mental stimulation as well as heaps of exercise. They excel in adjectives dog sports & I found that was the best thing for my Border Collie after moving her from my parents farm to a town when I first vanished home. They are all ways thinking & need to be capable of use their brains or they get very destructive. I used to take mine swimming a few times a week, dog park every afternoon & a bearing & training in morning & agility on Sat/Tues & obedience on thurs evenings. She was one of my best ever dogs & Borders are contained by my top 3 breeds till this day.
As long as they live on the border of town they should be okay.
As long as they get exercise they would be fine border collies can actually become destructive if they don't get satisfactory excercise
Border Collies can do great as long as they are walk for at least an hour a day. They will, of course, want training. They can get quite rambunctious, but they are very smart. They should not grasp bored, so if you are gone you should probably put them in a large kennel so they withhold from chewing. If you have the time to put in and the attention, they should do great!! Always remember you have to be trained too!!
Just as long as it gets lots of exercise they work out fine. Agility is a great workout for Borders
