Can somebody make clear to me what's involved within cropping a dog's ears?
If it means cutting them in some instrument to make the dog conform to a certain standard, and this cutting or cropping freshly involves the hair on the dogs ears, then I will be re-assured; but, if it in actuality means cutting into his actual ears, then I will own to rethink the matter and wonder at the insanity which seems to drive some people when it comes to dogs. So what does it have it in mind? Thanks!
A dog is put under anesthetic and the actual ears are cut, usually pain medication is given afterward. Some dogs' ears are in reality cropped because of the incidence of ear infections in the individual dog or the dog's breed.
It system cutting part of the ear off.
The purpose cropping and docking was done and written into the standards of certain breeds is because it was prerequisite to prevent tears, rips and infection in the ears and tail. Docking and cropping is no more cruel than spaying and neutering which is done for convenience. The altering of animals is only compulsory because people are irresponsible and can not keep their intact animals safe from unwanted litters so couldn't it be said that spaying and neuter is insanity too?
It means people elect to continue beside the standards of the breed and it is not wrong or insane.
Answers: The ears are cut, not just the fur...what a barbaric and cruel practise.
Have a rethink and ponder the insanity of it all. I think it looks terrible too.
At least with tail docking it's done when pups are only 3 days outmoded and the nervous system hasn't yet developed. With ear cropping the poor dogs suffer pain.
It's cutting off part of the ear, below general anesthesia. Several weeks of taping & posting follow to train the ears to stand.
IMO, opinions change & I doubt I'd ever choose to crop a dog's ears, but I have also never met a dog who suffered long-standing trauma from the procedure.
I used to volunteer with Boxer Rescue, handled oodles cropped dogs & had a cropped Boxer for 14 years (my parents chose to crop- I was 13 when we got the dog).I hold *never* encountered a head-shy dog who didn't like to have his ears handle. In fact, most of them LOVED ear rubs. You'd think if they be in so much "agony" from the crop, they'd learn that having their ears messed near was painful & would become head-shy. Never seen it.
In a world where on earth dogs are tied to chains, left out in the elements, neglected, starved, beaten, dragged aft vehicles, burned, fought, bred to death for profit and worse.by comparison, ear cropping under anesthesia & veterinary trouble doesn't seem that "insane" to me. Needless, perhaps, but hardly "insane"...Just my belief.
Cropping is about surgically removing a portion of a dog's ear flesh in order to change around them into a shape deemed more attractive by certain individuals. If you are not planning on showing your dog I would not recommend cropping his/her ears. In fact, there are breeds where the standard call for either cropped or natural ears, so even that isn't a hard and efficient rule.
The only reason for cropping your dog's ears aside from that, I suppose, was whether you honestly plan on having the critter fighting wild boars or other vicious animals, which is from where on earth the practice supposedly comes. Apparently the ears were more likely to be torn in that sort of a situation whether they hung low.
Some times crops fail and have to be redone. They are a surgery so they aren't free and enjoy risks, but I've seen no conclusive scientific evidence that there is any benefit to have it done. I have seen no statistical difference as to the incidence of ear infections between cropped and natural eared dogs of matching breeds. Besides, watching a puppy accidentally bump his ears on a chair leg and then yelp in twinge is never, ever fun.
It is the actual cutting of their ears into shapes. Afterwards, sometimes splints are added so the ears will stand up straight. Sort of like a mold.
Personally, I'm adjectives for ear cropping. No, not because I'm cruel or not because I'm allowing my dogs to suffer, but simply put, they aren't in excruciating pain. I just don't see it similar to that. I know someone who got their ear burned off when they were awake, that's right BURNED, and he still have a chunk missing from his ear today, and you know what he said? He said that of course it hurt during the process (it be an accident, btw), and was sore the next two days, but after that, it be like it never happened. I see it with dogs, too.
A dog is asleep when this happen, so they don't feel that. Once they're awake, they're put on pain killers, so they only just feel that. The only time it actually hurts is whether you're poking at his ears and rubbing them and what not. After a week, it's like it never even happened.
And I own Cane Corso Mastiffs. No, it isn't a breed standard, but I enjoy the unproved cropped Italian look. Also, they get more ear infections with their ears uncropped. And the biggest reason I crop ears is because to be precise the weakest part of their body. They were originally cropped because when they were hunting down wolves, and hunting considerable game, they wanted the ears cropped as so the CC wouldn't feel any cramp, and the ears wouldn't get in the way. So one-sidedly, I find it a breed standard.
That's like saying you wouldn't get your Doberman Pinscher's ears cropped because it's "cruel" or "inhumane". There's zilch wrong with ear cropping if you're careful and are civilized for your dog properly.
