Could this be skin allergies?

My 5 month old puppy had a spot on his the inside of his thigh where he keep licking and its turning pinkish red but is not bleeding. He also seems to have really dry skin. He also likes to lay by the furnace vent when they come on. I got him some oatmeal shampoo to moisturize his skin but have not used it nonetheless. Could it be skin allergies? Oh and he is on frontline monthly so I know its not fleas.
Could be. Go to nearest animal supply house and ask for a dutiful shampoo to take care of the problem. Could be something in mat or something you used on puppy. Or the front line may be the problem, but try the shampoo first. Vet bills can be real high.
It could be anything from allergies to mange to just a hot spot.

Shampooing him probably isn't going to help to much, baths tend to dry out a dogs skin more.

Allergies are not as likely whether it's only one spot which leaves with us with any a hot spot(an area that he has irritated himself) or mange.(small bugs living under the skin)

Oops, I forgot another opportunity, ringworm is also very common in puppies.

You really should see a vet to rule out mange or ringworm, they both necessitate to bet treated medically and ringworm can transmitted to the people in the house as well as other animals.
Answers:    My dog had the same thing and it WAS fleas. And she WAS on Frontline. But she is allergic to fleas, so even one little flea bite sends her into a serious antipathy. Do whatever you can to keep him from licking the spot or else it will never alleviate. Thoroughly wash his bedding, and vacuum and clean the house (dust mites are a common allergen as very well as fleas). Depending on what kind of oatmeal shampoo it is... that might help a little near his dry skin. I used Aveeno 100% Colloidal Oatmeal Bath on mine (recommended by another owner of an allergic dog) and it worked wonders. It's a powder, and I made a thick mixture of this and warm water and poured it over her and consent to it sit for maybe 10 minutes, then rinsed off.

Start giving him omega 3 supplements (fish grease pills) to help his skin and coat. 3 a day will do, but it will be a month before you see results.

For the impulsive -- this is the only thing that worked for my dog. My mom recommended it, said that it's even safe whether she happens to lick it -- and I was really skeptical, but after nothing else worked I granted to try it. It's used for baby diaper rash, and it's kind of an feeble product so I only found one drug store near me that sold it. But it cleared up the rash within just a few days, after 3 months of trying different products and medications. It's called Lantiseptic, and the knob ingredient is lanolin (50%). Here's the link to the product site, just to show you what it looks like (the one within the tub, center).

finally consider RINGWORM - this is a fungus
when is puppies next vet check?

seriously look at the link first..
Maybe it could be ring worm. I hold found some info and pix of it for you.

Possibly may be allergies. What type of food is he on? Maybe try a lamb & rice food. Also supplementing with a multivitamin, omega 3 &6 fatty acids, brewers yeast and garlic for dogs, will help with dry skin. It cuts process back on shedding, makes the coat shiny and softer and keeps fleas absent - you won't need expensive frontline anymore! Good Luck! Hope I have helped.
Derm Caps aid dry skin. Allergies R common in dogs. Wouldn't hurt to go to the Vet, whether he has something like ringworm U'd want to know, it is contagious. U can get Derm Caps (a)a Vet clinic or pet store. They R not prescription.
