Help! My dog constantly chews on her paw! ?

I know it's allergies and I've tried Benadryl, several different foods (no grains, wheat, corn, etc.) The only thing that seem to work is Prednisone but I don't want her on it for long since she's only three and I've heard it can damage a dog's liver. Any suggestions on food or treatment?
Are you certain her nails aren't too long?
Take your dog to the vet.You can attain her an antihistamine that she can take daily. Benadryl doesn't work that well for skin allergies. In the meantime, you can discourage her chewing by getting a bitter spray to be precise safe to spray on her paws. It might help break the cycle and lessen the irritation. Cool marine helps ease itching as well. Make certain you aren't bathing her with anything that isn't made for dogs with sensitive skin. It might not be a food allergy. It may be something else. Mange can cause itching too. A vet can diagnose what is cause the itching and treat it.
MY pup had the same probablem. Allergies would receive her back feet swell up. Poor thing. We took her to the vet and they give us a prescription. It was a bit of a hassle, since we had to soak her feet twice a daytime in a certain liquid, but her foot healed up quick, and another prescribed allergy med kept it from coming back. She's pretty hoary and frail, but the meds seemed fine for her =D
First rule out diabetes. That can cause a yeast infection. If she doesn't have diabetes, see that she is bathed contained by oatmeal, and apply oatmeal to her feet a couple of times a week. Don't let her get around any shampoos of perfume.

Stay with a lamb diet and if you find it is allergies and you must use prednisone, then perchance she will be ok on light doses. My dog was on prednose for 13 years because of her back and she have no ill effects.

Good luck to you and your pup.

ps. Get some good made in USA chewies for her to facilitate her break the habit too.
well how something like putting something on it that is harmless but it will hate the penchant. take care of it like a child. i am not certain what you would put on it except maybe tabasco sauce or something. you could put gloves of some sort on it also covering them.
Could be a yeast infection in her toenails. I would try nail bed scrape seeing if there are yeast and if so consequently treating it. Well okay your vet doing a scraping and then prescribing medications. Otherwise in attendance is allergy testing. You perhaps could find out what she is allergic too.
Answers:    Dogs can be allergic to frequent things, food, cleaners, your carpet, grass etc.

You can have allergy testing done at the vet to determine what she's allergic to and try to do away with the allergen as best you can.

As for diet, you could try raw. You control everything that goes into the diet. A dog that's allergic to say chicken when its contained by kibble, can do fine with chicken raw. Cooking changes the food so much that the body see it totally differently than raw food. I know many people who's dogs own allergies and switching to raw really helped. One of them was on Pred. and no longer requirements it. http://www.rawfed.com

Another thing that could be going is a skin infection. If your dog was itchy from allergies and chewing her feet, it would present skin infection causing bacteria such as Staph or Yeast a great chance to go and get established.

Another thing to look at is exercise. Sometimes dogs will do this out of boredom. I've known more than one dog that has literally lick holes in their legs simply because they didn't get enough exercise and mental stimulation.
If your'e not to sure what you should do, you should only talk to your vet.
You have certainly tried all the generally recommended treatments.

The other thing that Dr. Michael Fox suggests is to try cooking for your dog at home.

You can likely find doggy recipe on the 'net.

It might be worth trying for a little while at least, in recent times to give your dogs system a rest.

My daughter recently had to alteration her 12 year old dog to a sweet potato based food, as she had developed allergies to adjectives grains.

Good Luck!
