Hi, i would close to to start my own dog kennel/cattery trade, i be wondering, how do i instigate?
i have just passed my dog grooming course, i have a diploma in a minute. i would like to own my own kennels, i live in northamptonshire, i have some money, but obviosly would own to take out a business loan or something. i was in recent times wondering how do i start? do i need a licence? etc.. or can i just buy somewhere then start keeping animals in attendance? please help. genuine and uk only please x
Your best bet is to actually work for a kennel/cattery/groomer for a couple of years to memorize the business.
A diploma is nice, but I guarantee you, you DON'T know everything you need to know to run a successful and safe animal trade.
The hardest part would be getting a licence to run a kennel or cattery. You cannot just set up a kennel business, you have need of a licence from the local authority and you need planning permission for change of use (unless you hold lots of money to buy an existing one).
Planning permission will involve all sorts of aggro with access, design, drainage, objection from locals etc.etc.
Catteries are slightly easier to get permission for as you don't have a hum problem with cats!
It's not easy to set up a new commerce & involves months of expense and hardwork which could well end in nought and mean you have to start all over again.
I would propose you invest in a book called running a boarding kennels by sheila Zabawa, it's a bit out of date presently but will give you plenty to think about

Business school, you will learn adjectives of that plus a lot more by going school. There is a lot more to owning a commerce than just getting the money to open it.
It starts with your perception of what you are. You would no longer be a "groomer with a diploma", you would be a business manager/owner.

however i have a amount in business so let me start.
there are two things you can do. first off ifyou have your own domestic you could buy kennels for out the back, maybe 3-4. that way you can hold 3-4 dogs at a time. Start advertising in local paper for dog sitting, speaking to friends who can speak to thier friends etc.
dont muse you need a license. I wouldnt take out loan until you know there is a flea market for your service which will be done by doing the above. remember you have to provide care to the animals so animal supervision qualifications are a must.
Think whther you will provide food etc. why not speak to other kennel/cattery business. see what they do.
