HOW TO BECOME THE PACK LEADER TO MY DOG?
What do you all think of cesar milan's theory on fitting the pack leader for your dog.
Any of you have any tips in which I can become/stay the pack mastermind.
Thanks
I reason (and the American Humane Association agrees with me) that his methods are ineffective, outdated, and inhumane.
You don't need to be. Stick to positive training methods and enroll in an surrender class - trust me, you and your dog both will be better off for it.
Cesar bases his theories on outdated, disproven science. Also he seems to contradict himself quite a bit. He have no credentials as a behaviorist, and his methods only serve to supress behavior, not actually change it. Supress a behavior adjectives you want, to truly help the dog you need to change the road the dog percieves something. Now you've got a dog with all these pent up sensations, and one day, they're all gonna come to the surface again.
A true leader become a leader by earning trust and respect and does not lead out of disquiet. You control everything your dog wants and needs, food, toys, walking, going fun places etc. Couple all of that beside some basic training, and boundaries and viola! You're the leader, and your dogs will love you for it, not fear you.
Even the Monks of New Skete who chitchat about alpha rolls in their books, have in a minute reversed their stance on alpha rolls.
Trust and respect. Never hit your dog to gain the upper hand. Be firm but loving.
And Cesar Milan is good.
Not certain of this Cesar you speak of but you defiantly must assume the role as the leader.
You do this with affection, attention and routine training.
Your the boss plain and simple and whether your not your on the road to becoming one of those dog owners who are frazzled and think they own bad dogs.
Those are the ones who end up dumping them or shuffling them from owner to owner.
Be the leader please.
Cesar Millan? Can't stand him. He has absolutely no professional training and uses outdated technique that have been disproved (such as alpha rolling and flooding). He's nothing but a charismatic guy next to a TV show. Most professional trainers and behaviorists wildly disagree with most of his techniques. More on why the so call "Dog Whisperer" isn't all he's cut out to be:

Darksong~
The best warning I can give you is to stay calm and never show your emotions particularly if you are upset with your pet. I love cesar.
I have tried alot of the things he does on his show beside my dogs, and it really works. You have to be the leader. You do this by taking charge and not trying to correct your dog. How you chitchat to your dog and taking them on walks is another good way to train them. You hike ahead of the dog, not the other way around. Basicly the dog will look for ways to take over as funny as that sounds but you have to be within control at all times. I think cesar's show is great, and I learn something spanking new every time I watch it. Good luck.
I think you should avoid Cesar and find a good local trainer to guide you instead. Following Cesar's methods is dangerous and can front to a serious dog bite. Don't try it, its not worth it and you can seriously screw up your dogs that way. -Neb
I think Pete tin hit it!
I have have dogs my entire life...started in obedience classes and trialing when I be in Jr High, then raised and shown surrounded by conformation, last 14 years trialing in agility and training agility students.
I never knowlingly used a particular "method" of training. All I hold ever known is that I was the human who knew the human rules of the household. There be things needed and things I wanted in my dogs. And it was my charge to train the dogs in a way they would understand.
No potty within house. No biting. No jumping all over people. I WILL cut toenails, etc. Sit funds sit and stay means stay. And most importantly come means come. Dogs will walk other on a leash, and for the dogs I have spent more time with, meaning training, they are expected to be dependable off leash (not around roads though...always leash back on for "a moment ago in cases")
My dogs were to be my companions, to go for walk, to play with. I have always enjoy seeing them have fun. I have gone out of my way, or extended our walk for their enjoyment whether I truly felt like it or not. I own always allowed "dog time" and followed them along while they check "p-mail" or sniff gopher holes.
In short, I have always tried to be a unbiased, considerate "owner", but the dogs must adhere to the rules when asked.
So..owner, human, mom, boss, pack leader? It is simply a term for being the responsible party
To be the pack leader you have to be able to show your'e the strongest and fittest amongst them to front - go slow on punishment , remember , never to hit your dog - grab the dog by the scruff of the neck and a few not to belligerent shakes will do to show your the boss- for the rest plenty of time and consistency in training ,first of all yourself, and time spent with your dogs will be enough to have a healthy relationship with your dogs
I have never watch him because we don't get that chanel here, but I have read one of his books.
I think everyone in a minute is trying to find a quick fix for everything. When they see him they think it is a quick fix for adjectives their dogs problems. Or they are going to become a "pack leader" and have a good dog.
Some true professionals say he have set dog training back many years. I don't believe he is a true Professional. Most dog trainers and behaviorists disagree with his methods. But he is a apt showman. His methods are also dangerous because people try to copy what he does and end up getting bitten.
I do hope you will pinch the time to read the following.

Answers: Cesar Milan is putting into different words, words that people are finding easier to understand, the most successful methodology of dog handling.
Barbara Woodhouse did it years ago, and unfortunately used the word 'telepathy' where on earth Cesar says energy, that poor choice of words made her hard for some folks to take.
The Monks of New Skete teach the same things, but do not stress so much that what it is adjectives about is the 'Pack" and instead focus on Alpha.
Brad Patterson teaches identical methods to Cesar but doesn't bother calling it anything adopt responsible dog ownership.
Brian Kilcommons teaches Barbara Woodhouse method, but leaves out the metaphsyics.
There are other approaches to dog training to be sure, but it is plain fact that Pack is concrete, Dogs are purely a Pack species, and the Pack approach works.
I myself firmly believe in these people and practice their methods in my on a daily basis life. The proof is in the Pack.
Pack is what dogs are all in the region of, there are other training techniques, some work with unmistaken dogs, others work with other dogs... Pack works with all dogs.
Call it Alpha dog, (Monks of New Skete), Call it Pack Leader (Cesar), Call it mystic comunication, (Woodhouse)
It all comes down to training. You hold to show them you are in charge and not let them get absent with any bad/ unwanted behavior.
Any basic obedience trainer should be capable of help you with that. Good luck and be patient. It will not develop over night.
I have actually used, with much success, Cesar's tips on fitting the Pack leader...It all started with mastering the tramp, then getting into a routine...lets just right to be heard I went from an owner of one very rambunctious uncontrollable husky that "Professional trainers" have told me was un-trainable in many ways...to a drastically well balance happy pack of 6!
Get into a routine of taking each day walks
Dicipline, let them know the rules and the boundaries and don't "let it slip" once surrounded by a while...this will bring them to question your leadership.
Affection, as much as you can dish out, but don't dote...make certain you employ each of the "tips" to build a happy pack.
I read both of his books to sustain better understand how I needed to approach being a Leader of a large pack.
I think some people just try too frozen to be the pack leader, so they lose their consistency, which will only confuse their dog...
I mull over consistency is the key!
I think Cesar Milan is full of you know what.
I've owned dogs all my energy, have never used "pack leadership", and all my dogs have turned out basically fine.
