Is this the right size kennel?

i keep my dog in a kennel overnight because he tends to own accidents and tear stuff up when unsupervised.

i am wondering if the kennel he is surrounded by currently is too small. it's just a little one. he is 17 pounds and can turn around, lay down, and stand only. he have a bigger one but our mother dog has it for her babies.

my parents want me to keep him in the tiny kennel until she get out of his (it's gonna be like 8 weeks) but i feel mean because he lone really can lay down comfortably.

am i just being silly?
I'm satisfied if the dog's competent to lay down on his side and stretch his legs out comfortably. He should be able to stand up without crouching, turn around, and have for a moment bit of "leg room" so to speak.

ADD:
From your additional details, I'd say you're not being foolish - he's outgrown the little crate. (BTW - if that's him as your icon - he's ADORABLE!)

ADD:
It's really your judgment ring up - upgrading wouldn't be terribly expensive, but as you said - he's only in it overnight (and probably sleeping anyway). So long as he can sleep comfortably, he's probably fine.

Then again, this is adjectives coming from the girl whose father and boyfriend hand-built a 6' x 4' kennel for our 2 dogs so they can be together whilst still having their own "personal space". =)
As long as it's just for sleeping and he fits comfortabley surrounded by it, it should be just fine.
Answers:    I don't have a sneaking suspicion that you're being silly. As long as he can be comfortable when he's in in that it should be alright until he gets his place back. You haven't mentioned him carrying on so he must be OK ; )
