Special treat from the meat unit?
I'd like some ideas for extra special treats I can bestow my puppies. One is a 6 month old beagle and the other is a less than 4 month old Min Pin mix. I'm looking for something inexpensive that I can take at the super market. Preferably an inexpensive bone in cut of meat that I can cook in some process and they can enjoy for more than just a few minutes. I just don't know what types of meat/bones are correct and really would rather not guess or feed them expensive cuts of meat.
They love the pig ears but they don't last exceedingly long and I've heard they are not very good for them.
Pig ears hold way too much fat. A good treat would be lean. Some empire will tell your raw. I believe in cooking and don't serve bones here of any type. I'm a rawhide personage and my dogs do fine with supervision.
You can phone up up the butcher at the local supermarket and ask about bones for dogs...they are usually very inexpensive. However, be aware that immense bones cause a great deal of wear on the teeth. If you get marrow bones or something near a lot of rich meat or fat, it can cause digestive upset. My petsitter bought adjectives my dogs marrow bones as a treat and I came back to a diarrhea extravaganza...
I rarely grant real bones anymore. I feed raw chicken back, necks, wings on a regular basis, and donate rawhide chips, which keep them busy for around 20 mins without wearing the teeth.
Ask for a medium sized BEEF bone, either rib or soup knuckle should work. Beagles and Min Pins don't have the cheek strength like rotties that would break the bones too quickly. Just ask at the meat counter for a knuckle of the appropriate size for both dogs because the bigger one may chew on the smaller dog's treat, don't want any choking!
I found beef rib bones a good treat but you hold to watch. As soon as they can crack them, make sure to remove any small pieces. The knuckles are more "dog friendly" and probably will closing longer.
Do not give them pork or chicken bones as these splinter easily and can lodge in their digestive tract or throat.
Alot of dogs back up allergic to the pig ears. I don't give my dogs those.
If you find an inexpensive bone ... DON't cook it. You should give raw bones to dogs.
Also did you ever try bully sticks? They second a lot longer than pig ears.
Answers: I buy soup bones. They normally still have some meat on them. DO NOT cook them, just give them organic. But make sure the dogs aren't on the carpet or furniture because it can carry a little messy.
I also buy whatever meat is marked down for fast sale (usually because its near expiration date). Again, serve it without cooking it. Last week my dogs get lamb chops because they were marked down from nearly $8 to something like $3. I merely cut them into cubes and added some to everybody's dish.
Another easy treat is raw ground turkey (or ground beef). Usually comes in a one pound roll.
I have a little dog who loves the bone from my lamb steaks. He licks out the marrow after buries the rest.
pig ears and raw hides are horrible for dogs, they are treated beside so many chemicals!
shoulder or leg bones from a local butcher that sells local meats, serve natural..cooked bones splinter.
