We own a 10 week dated collie but he Cry on a hours of darkness can any one agree to me know on what to try please?
Are you crating the dog? I be not crating my lab when we rescued him and he would cry and pace all night. As soon as i found a crate big plenty for him he moved right in. Haven't had a bad darkness since. Dogs are "den" animals and feel more secure if they hold a smallish place to curl up in. If you are already crating you might try a new location for the crate. is there a place within your home the dog seems most comfortable?
If you just got the dog, it would be a fitting idea to bring him into your room. However, if every time he cries and you give him attention, the dog will win the nasty habit of crying in demand to get some attention. If you want to look at the whole psychological aspect of dog training, you are reinforcing the dog that when he cries he will get what he desires. Technically you should reward your dog if he does not cry, but I am not too sure if that would work. Someone I work next to bought a little chihuahua and he cried during the night and they developed a sort of routine with him. She put him hard by her bed in his cage, and closed it, and stuck her fingers in the shut within so the dog could smell and lick her fingers. Then the dog would calm down knowing that there was someone here. She then slowly moved the dog closer and closer to the door and eventually the dog had no problems sleeping in another room. If you are completely isolating your dog from you, it might not be the best piece because you have to remember he is still a very young puppy. Puppies are somewhat close to children and sometimes we need to treat them as such (although you wouldn't ignore your child crying in the middle of the night). If you are not letting her out to do her commerce on her pad or outside before bedtime, that could also be an issue.
Answers: How long have you had him?
What the dog experts say:
If you only got him, he's crying because he's probably all by himself in a box/room/crate and lost his mom & littermates. See if moving his crate into your bedroom will help him not feel so alone. When he starts crying, speak soothingly to him.
What I do:
Put the puppy contained by bed with you and cuddle him until he goes to sleep. Warning: If you start this, you may have the puppy, who will eventually grow into a dog sleeping beside you permanently.
