What is a small dog that stays small?
Me and my mom want a small dog other than a Chiuaua dog I love dogs but for some reason Chiuaua's scare me, but they are cute. Do you know how big Maltese puppies achieve
5-10 pounds. They require lots of grooming though. Although they don't shed and are totally cute their coats can get matted if you don't brush them all the time and their curls will continue to grow so it needs regular cutting too.
Size should not be the merely trait you are looking at in a breed. here is a good place to start researching on small breeds:

Once you find a few breeds that interest you and your mom, do more in depth research on it and determine whether you think the breed would be a good match for your domestic and lifestyle. Then you can begin looking for a reputable breeder, or at a shelter/rescue for the right dog.

agree to me get this straight...you are scared out of a dog that is almost 5 lbs and is probably going to be more scared than you?! then you would be terrified to the point of not moving of a maltese!

Um.. If a Chihuahua dog scares you, sounds to me like you don't necessitate a 'small' dog at all.
it adjectives depends on what you pay, you can get a big maltese for cheaper or a mini for $$$$$ there is a store close me that sells certain breeds in toy or tea cup but exceptionally expensive be prepared to dish out 2-3000 dollars

Go for a Boston terrier. they're really smart, playful, relations friendly, low maintenance, cute, & they're clowns.
Boston Terriers are great and they're not as high maintenance as other small dogs. They are super smart and easy to train.
maltese should be less than 7lbs but many are approximately 8lbs-10lbs
Yorkies are 7lbs or less :-)
Maltese get about 4-6 lbs, 8-10 inches towering.Yorkies are another one a lot of people will suggest, they grasp to be about 5-7lbs and 9 inches tall :D
ADD: Dont get suckered into "teacup" dogs when you are looking for your puppy, they simply dont exist, they are the runts of a poorly bred litter :)
OMg get a Shih Tzu they are so cute they LOVE to cuddle and they dont shed!! u will LOVE them!!
No but you could look Maltese up on the internet. Shih Tzus are small though, also Yorkshire Terriers are small.
