These are big aggressive schooling fish. They should be kept in species with the sole purpose tanks.
Piranhas live in schools, but I hear that they will attack respectively other if you put two in one tank, because they enjoy less space than in the Amazon (obviously) and they get board. But dance ahead, get the one. My friend has one and its pretty cool.
Answers:    Piranaha ARE a schooling fish.

If kept on their own they become very nervous and shy, and may not even eat properly and eventually die.

If you cant house a small university, dont get them. One unhappy fish is not going to be at all showy.

If your tank is small, pick a school of smaller active fish, or something that can live solitary similar to a medium size cichlid.
