2 guppy breeding question?
Q1: Does a gravid spot have to be black? Because i bought a guppy that i'm going to breed and it has a small spot where a gravid spot should be but it's brown and pretty small. Is she pregnant?
q2:Once my guppy have bred, how long will it take to see the signs of pregnancy (gravid spot showing up, big belly, etc.)?
Don't answer unless you know what you're doing=)
Answers: I'm 14 years old and my guppies are breeding approaching crazy. Their gravid spots are usually black, the darker they get, the closer they are to giving birth. Sometimes fragment of it turns red, I think that's normal though.
A guppy is usually pregnant for approximately a month. Actually 2 of my females that I bred are pregnant right now, the gravid spot is fairly small but I don't know how long they have be pregnant for.
Good luck! And pretty soon you'll regret breeding guppies :P You'll end up with tons and tons of fish tanks because they breed approaching CRAZY and I'm having a huge crisis right now because I have so heaps babies.
You can usually see the gravid spot (which can be brownish colored) even if she is not yet pregnant. You won't know for certain if she is pregnant until she starts getting bigger and the gravid spot starts darkening, which may not really be noticeable for a couple of weeks. If you see a mannish mating with her you can pretty much assume she's pregnant. Guppies have their babies in the region of 4 weeks after mating. Males will still try to mate with the female even whether she is already pregnant. Females are almost contantly pregnant if there are males around. They breed similar to crazy! Hope this answers some of your questions!
