A solution for quill Algae?
Alright, I am going through a bout of hair algae in my 40 gallon tank stocked next to live plants.
Unfortunately, I have wild bettas which eat anything that fits contained by their mouths which includes my 10 cherry shrimp who WERE almost an inch each. So I am limited on what size fish/invert I can put within there.
I have also reduced the amount of hours my lights are on per day from 8 to 5 and plan to trim the specific plants that hold the hair algae on it (heck if I know the names of it)
Can anyone present me some information on what fish or snails would find hair algae tasty?
Answers: I've put together an algae-tackling pack which will get rid of your problem at full tilt and easily;
- Cover all sides of the tank near thick black paper to block out all buoyant for about a week. This will considerably weaken the algae.
- Do a good 50% sea change to get rid of base nutrients and add on dechlorinated, cool, treated water.
- Add a few Apple Snails which are available from any pet shops and only cost a few lb's or $'s. They are algae-eating machines.
- Leave the light sour for a whole week along with the paper cover.
- Remove rotting plants which could be creating ammonia.
- Trimming the plants is obedient for them and will promote fresh growth.
- A pleco is a good idea along with Apple Snails - but opt for one or two as a maximum.
