About putting driftwood within a container?
I'm thinking about setting up a 20 gallon fish tank. (already have a 5) But I'm wondering more or less putting in driftwood? Can I just get one external then boil it? I know about tannins.. but how long does it take to procure rid of it? Or is it just better to buy some from a store? Sorry for so many questions. Thanks for answering within advance!
Natural driftwood is great. Just boil it for 15 minutes and it'll be fine!
If you get a piece from outside you need to boil it to disinfect. If you live fundamental a beach or other body of water, you may find a piece that already sinks, otherwise, it can take months or even years to waterlog a piece of wood. Your other opportunity is to use aquarium safe glue to glue slate or rocks to serve make you wood sink.
Answers: You can get it from outside. You will necessitate to soak it for twenty four hours or more in a bucket which has not held any chemicals. Soaking for longer periods is recommended, to ensure it sinks and to abet remove tannins (1-2 weeks+). Then it should be boiled. Fill the pot until the wood is completely submerged. Boil for fifteen minutes and then drain the water. Repeat this process two more times.
Removing tannins can be compared to brewing tea; the longer the tea bag is vanished in the water, the darker the tea become. The same is true with driftwood; the longer it's in the water, the most tannins are released. Boiling it more will collectively help, if you don't feel you've removed ample of the tannins.
