Betta fish misspelling beta ?
bettas is commonly misspelled betas
is that a mistake made by the person
or
do petshops mislabel their fish
It's probably got something to do with American spelling. Outside of fish forums everybody in the UK call them Siamese Fighters, you would only refer to them as Betta if you were using the Latin, " Betta Splendens".
Americans telephone them Beta and likewise would call them Betta if using the Latin.
That's probably a generalisation, but to identify any fish near certainty you can't rely on colloquial names.

I know were your from, but American English is the most widely spoken variation, hence if the common name Beta is used most it become the accepted norm. There will be English people going into English pet shops asking for Beta, because this is a mixed nationality forum and Betta Splendens get called Beta in here :o)
It's a mistake made by a lot of individuals, because their computer tells them that is should be spelled beta, and they don't take the time to look up the right spelling on the internet. People should know that when they look beta up on google, and wiki appears about finance and investing, but nothing appears more or less bettas, that that's not how you spell it. But, when you look up betta, you see all these pictures of bettas, and betta care pages, and wiki bettas.
