Yes, most people nurture their red eared slider turtles feeder size goldfish. They can learn to eat floating pellets too. Much cheaper,and kinder.
Yes and no. They can and will however occasionally a few fish stick around and the turtles acquire "used" to them being around. You might even say that they become friends/tankmates. I have see it happen; then somebody throws a new fish contained by there and the turtle might nip at them, while leaving their buddy alone.
