How do japanese hold their kois big and colorful? what's their traded clandestine?
love to learn how japanese keep their kois..even in concrete ponds..
Good water quality.
Most of the ponds where on earth people have exceptional koi a lot of it is due to their marine supply.
They are usually away from the big cities tapping into raw springs
As previously mentioned they are kept in natural ponds and the fish being clean is more important than it being visible so the marine is allowed to become green with algae or brown from fish stirring up the bottom while eating natural foods.
Due to this combination of innate pond with natural water in that is usually an abundance of natural food which is other beneficial.
A few years ago I used to do lots of fishing/angling and one of the places I went had several koi within among the usual carp. The water was chocolate brown as the fish permanently stirred up the sediment and I caught some of the most fantastically coloured koi I own ever seen there
I often wonder whether the sun might have something to do with how they appear because uv rays will have much more effect through clear sea than cloudy. If a cars paint will fade in the sun, what happens to a fishes skin?
There is no secret. A full size female koi can enjoy 300,000 eggs. The japanese cull very strictly several times so you only end up near the best of the best and then grow these fish out in large ponds in need overcrowding them. Understock your aquariums, understock your ponds and only feed very soaring quality foods and be extreamly picky about what fish you start with and you will enjoy the same results as anyone else in the world. The problem in the US is society aren't willing to spend nearly as much money on high quality fish as the Asian's are and secondarily the Europeans are also prepared to spend more on fish than hobbyists in the US so the best fish go to these locations. The Israeli Kabuls that raise Koi hold excellent quality these days and the Japanese also produce excellent quality Koi. Get one from these suppliers and treat the fish properly and you will enjoy a world class Koi.
Answers: Keep or lift up? While most of the breeding is a trade secret raising them to an extent is as well. Traditionally Koi are kept contained by clay/mud ponds since they are rich in minerals and nutrients. This allows for full development. We in the US discern we need to have sparkling clean filter water ponds to keep these fish healthy, not so. Koi are better rotten in a natural mud pond with no filtration. We tend to do what WE want to consider out fish vs. what the fish really need.
