Need assistance choosing a cistern and occupant?

Okay, so I want to buy some fish, but I can't really afford tropicals (or the things like heaters that go with them!), so I'm going beside coldwater/freshwater. Firstly, what are my options besides Goldfish? I know about Bettas, but I also know they can fight respectively other, and I don't really want that. Ideally, I'd like about four or five smaller, colourful fish (of the same species or different, doesn't matter) contained by one tank. Also, I'd like to make it a small reservoir, again I can't afford anything big and I'd like to be able to place it on my desk so I can watch my fish whilst I work. So yeah, any suggestions?
your best bet is to get hold of a ten gallon tank and put in it two or three mollies and a gourami. this would make a pretty setup along with a few rocks from outside and a couple fake plants. this would however have need of a heater and filter, but you could get both of those for about 30 bucks
Ten gallon reservoir - 25.00
Fish - 20.00 (in all)
heater - 10.00
filter - 15.00
plants(fake) - a nice kit for about 10.00
rocks - free

Price overall - 80.00 dollars
Try Shri Lanka Guppies. They come in lots of different Colors and are terribly easy to keep. Their variations are cobra, partially black, rainbow, tequila sunrise, green, neon and a lot more that even I have never see.

You will still need to prepare the tank before getting the fish. You will want to read roughly the start-up cycle or nitrate cycle. The larger the tank the longer you will want to take setting it up. The payoff is that the larger tank is better within stability. I am listing a good resource for you to do your research. Best of all it is free.
Answers:    Look for some White Cloud Minnows.

You will individual need around a 10gal tank and a small power filter. A light will back with growing some live plants, but isn't vital.

I suggest you dont move about smaller than that, it will cost you about the same, and anything under 5gal is relatively difficult to look after, pretty much a death trap for most fish unless you know exactly what you are doing.
