New to the Koi pond thought?
Me and my girl are eyeballing a potential new home and it has a Koi pond, unfortunetly neither of us know how to maintain or even run a Koi pond. The only thing I know almost them is that its for Koi and/or goldfish. Where are some places i can go to learn how to run one or can anyone suggest a book or two, similar to Koi ponds for dummies or something?
Also, what about protecting it from bad weather like ice/snow and rainfall? I live in Oklahoma and we get some pretty... crappy, weather here and so if we seize this house I know Im gonna wanna protect it from the different climate changes.
Watergarden books from the local domestic depot are great for beginners to koi / pond keeping. Also yep Koi For Dummies. By R. D. Bartlett, Patricia Bartlett is a good book to read as well. Your local water garden shops that put up for sale koi will also be a great source of info and help
You don't need to protect your pond from winter. Your book will inform you to pull the filter and shut the pond down when the water temperatures reach 55 degree. Stop feeding the fish. Koi and goldies will go into hibernation when the water reach 50 degrees. They don't need an air pump and they don't obligation a heater and they don't need a fountain. This is the hardest thing to become conscious with a koi pond. I always have associates ask how do they breath if there is ice on the pond. The fish are in truth in a state of hibernation (like bears). they breath very little and since they are not eating no spend added. The key to ice over on a pond is DON"T TOUCH IT. don't try to break a hole surrounded by it nothing. Doing this can kill your fish.
Get the koi for dummies, you will find it interesting.
Firstly - as long as the pond is at least 3 foot deep the fish should be fine through cold winters, they don't really hibernate but will not generally feed and cover at the bottom - any shallower could mean they freeze.
Koi are exceptionally popular, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a local Koi club near you - pick up a national fishkeeping magazine and enjoy a flick through, most have a coldwater section. There will also be DOZENS upon dozens of books on koi keeping - visit a within reach pet or aquatics store with a good book section and see what you can find, the most not long published will be more up to date with current equipment available.
In fact a quick google through up this site:

Maybe contact them, they'll hold local advice (especially regarding weather) and may even be able to give a hand you out in person. If they're on the wrong side of the state, they may know another club closer to home.
Answers: yes there is a book on koi for dummies, weather changes you inevitability atleast 4 ft. deep for your pond. Koi keeping you need a good filter and capably aerated pond thats it.
