Setting up a trial Tropical aquarium?
I have had goldfish for a number of years, however due to a amendment in personal circumstances I am now fishless and considering buying a Trigon 190 for a tropical set up. I have spent a substantial time looking at nvarious sites and keen for a community set up. Can anyone suggest a good fish variety up for this size of tank. Am looking to plant it fully also.
what the guy said above me is the best advice so far
always start cycling a tank near a hardy fish like danios NOT neon tetras/ livebearers, they are a bad choice.
introduce them slowly, start with in the order of 6 danios or so and have a water test done after a couple weeks, whether all is well start introducing more fish. this will save you money and the lives of fish.
once you are geared up just go to your nearest aquatic store and ask what community fish they do, even the most oblivious salesman should know this.
have fun setting up your tank
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!
Everything everyone said was start with guppies or mollies or platys. DONT. They are not "hardy" fish, the cycles will move about crazy as they die quickly. Trust me i have been breeding guppies to my local pet store and i can assure you they will die.
Also dont nouns up your fish tank quickly 2 or 3 fish every week or so is enough whether not too much. Never by a "clean up fish" such as a Pleckcostomus until your tank is atleast 3 months running with fish surrounded by it.
My suggestions are:
Tetras < most kinds try to keep them cheap as they arent particulary good looking besides.
Zebra Danio's < great hardy fish and have extremely small stomachs so poo alot (starting your nitrogen cycle)
Confront a local pet store (not a well known brand shop) beside a reliable "fish man" and ask advice
NEVER START A TANK WITH LIVE BEARERS THEY ARE EXTREMELY SENSITIVETO CONDITIONS
hope you take my direction
If you want it Freshwater, some mollies or guppies are a good start. They multiply / breed quite quick so a 50 gallon container will be perfect. You can also get platys as they are good also. They are great fish and pretty jammy to take care of. Keep the temp at 26-28 C and you should expect more fish . Also you can add some tetras surrounded by your tank to make it colourful!
hope this helps
If this is your first trpoical setup, you might just want to stick next to guppies, .mollies, tetras, ect...and some sort of bottom feeder. The thing with these type of fish is that they get stressed out impressively easily and its good to get groups of these tyoes of fish. If I be you I would setup a Cichlid tank with all African Cichlids within it because they are very reliable and wont die off confidently.
Answers: I have a tanks this size and I keep hold of:
1 dwarf gourami
1 half moon betta
1 pealrscale angelfish
2 sword tails (though I want more!)
6 neon tetras
3 long skirt black tetras w/3 long skirt white or albino tetras
and 10 emerald corydora catfish.
2 ghoul shrimp
1 apple snail
For that size tank you have a lot of option and can keep schooling fish really nicely. Just make certain you stock for all parts of the tank. Top, middle and bottom dwellers.
