6 Month Old Colt With Hoof Cracks?
I just purchased a 6 mo old colt and on his back right hoof he have a hoof crack that is from the coronet band down to the ground. It's about partly an inch wide at the bottom but is thinner at the top. I have the farrier coming to look at it but I was hoping someone could tender me any information on a brand of hoof oil/tar that is good for hoof cracks.
I totally agree with MorgansU. Don't do any entry until the farrier has had a look at him.
Doesn't sound like a good situation. Many times, a coronary company injury produces an area of scar tissue that will remain present for the lifetime of the horse. It can be superficial and irrelevant, but that is not what you describe. A one-half inch nouns is not a crack, that is a really large separation. Topicals do not work. You have to own a good consistent barefoot trim and see if he will grow it out and have it resolve at most minuscule to some degree. give him good nutrition and linger. Don't put a bunch of commercial chemicals on your baby's feet. It will take 8-12 months to grow in a unmarked wall. Good luck.
There is an awesome product called Fiske's Hoof Lotion. I've see it do awesome recovery work. You can get it at a lot of tack shops as capably as www.fiskes.ca. Cheap and works a treat on the whole hoof as well as the hide.
ewwww...
Could be some kind of trauma to the coronet strip that causes the hoof to grow like that. Hope not...or it's going to be intensive ongoing maintenance from a farrier.
Regardless...similar to Morgans said...you have the farrier coming...wait for him. Let him tell you what he think is best for the job that needs done.
Answers: I take it you didn't own a vet check... Well from the coronet down that may be a big problem. I would wait for the farrier to come. Don't put anything on it or seal it until your farrier tells you so. You could wreak more problems.
As ably as a hoof oil (i find this better than tar) i would definitely use a good trait feed supplement, there are ones specially designed for brittle or cracking hooves.
it's hard to say, really.
the safest thing to propose, right now, is a feed supplement. i feed my horses 1 cup of black grease sunflower seeds, per day. it helps near hoof and hair strength, adds a nice gloss, and help build the immune system up a bit. should you go this route with your baby, you'dwant to join no more than 1/4 cup.
you could also pick up some plan jello, and add 1 tablespoon to each meal.
otherwise, finding a perfect biotin supplement will help. just be sure that your vet approves this, first, self that your feeding it to a baby.
best of luck!
