Barrel race?

does it matter the age of the horse you are training for barrel racing? is 8 too ripened? i want to train my horse to barrel race but i don't know how or if i can. i can't catch a trainer (i don't have money(i'm only 11)) can somebody tell me how to train my horse to butt race? i don't think he has a clue what it is.
THX:D
do YOU know how to barrel see? if not its probably not a good idea to train a horse to do something that you dont even know how to do...

however, whether you have expirience in this feild, then i would propose starting off slow. take him through the pattern at lone a walk for the first few days. after that do a lot of trotting. when you think he is set you can start to slow lope and so on. just make sure that you are not adding up speed to soon. do a lot of bending and flexing excercizes. you should also pick up a book on how to start a barrel horse.

hope i helped
no..8 is not at all too old. My morgan didn't start to butt race until she was 18, and we won races!! You will want to start at a stand and supple his d¨Ścolletage on each side ( loosen the right rein and massage the left rein until he brings his manager to the left...than do the opposite to the right) After that start walking him around the barrels supple with your inside rein while going around, and see with your outside leg (to teach him to catch close to the barrels) eventually trot around them doing the same thing you would do at a walk...engender sure you are always looking ahead to the next vat...if he tries to speed up when you don't want him too, stop and back him. Do this every time he speeds up, until he learns he requests to listen to you and not choose his speed. After a few times of a collected trot, extend the trot, tan eventually lope the barrels.( remember to change his lead after the first barrel)It will bring some time before you can actually gallop them. When you do them..always kind him walk them and trot them. Good Luck with your horse!! :D
do you know how to set up the barrels? 8 isn't too old to start in barrel race. I'm have been in horse 4h for 4 years in a minute, so if you want to know more stuff on training exercises and rules I can let you know what you need to specifically know. lately e-mail me.
HI, the best pick for you is to find a barrel racing trainer and then propose services (grooming, cleaning stalls, barn chores etc) in exchange for lessons for you and your horse. Inexperienced riders trying to "train" their own horses is a recipe for disaster for both. righteous luck to you!
Answers:    eight is plainly not too old. I just got my horse this year and she is 13 and i trained her this year for barrels. resembling the person before me said if you do not know vat racing well you should not be training the horse. research a lot (books internet anything) whether you have no why of getting a trainer or getting help from an experienced barrel racer. But whether you have a good understanding: start walking the stencil, exaggerate every movement, leave a bigger pocket around the barrel then you would whether you were running the course, sit back, grab the horn & use leg pressure around the cask. if your horse has never done barrels before it might clutch a while for them to understand OH we are going AROUND the barrel, mine took awhile to realize we aren't just going by the vat but once you got that down start trotting the course. same thing leave a big pocket, sit wager on, grab horn and use leg pressure. once you have got that down you call for to make sure that your horse can pick up each front when cued. practice that around the area. When you practice cantering the pattern you want to trademark sure you are doing a slow canter, worry about speed when you and your horse hold perfected the pattern. do big pockets now too until your horse get the pattern down and is ranking the barrels.

all of this should take MANY weeks for respectively step. do not rush each step. and if you are on trotting when you start riding that day start next to walking the pattern a few times then trot it. And same with canter, walk a few times and trot before you canter. other exercises you can do are walk, trot or canter circles starting near a big one and slowly get smaller each time around (i believe this is called a corkscrew exercise not certain though). practice your horse moving off of leg pressure. i would look up other bending and flexing exercises and barrel racing exercises.

i would watch out when you perfect the pattern and your running the course. If your horse has a proclivity of getting hot and worked up i would barely ever full out run the course of your horse will become one of those crazy contest horses.
